Hoping to get back onto CPS some. Running Club might be a good way to do that. Signed up for a 1/2 marathon in April in NE Ohio. Last few races were the Christmas Story Run 10K in December and an Olympic Tri in the Fall. Despite the exercise, I'm as hefty as ever.

If there are any Garmin users out there, my Garmin user name is kedlb53.

Nice!

Some friends are looking to do a 1/2 in the spring - and there's a local 10 Miler at the end of March... long way to go for me to be ready for either one.

I did 4 in the cold this morning. Felt pretty good with a couple short walk breaks.

Did 3.1 on an indoor track today.

First completed 5k in almost 8months, feeling pretty good about it! :bacon: :bacon:

Nice!

I did 3 this afternoon. I was a little over dressed for mid 30s temps.

Woof, being improperly dressed for outdoor winter runs is a drag!

I did 3.5 this afternoon. Jack Jack rode his bike next to me. Having someone to talk to helped. Mid to upper 20s... toes were cold for a while.

We need a CPS biking club. I just can't seem to do distance running anymore for three different reasons. I stick to sprinting while cross training. But anyway, it was a cardio day so I did 25 miles on my new to me road bike. So much better to do that sort of riding with that bike than my mountain bike. I can keep up with the spandex crowd now!

I've been such a bum lately. Haven't run since I did the half marathon in december. Urg. Now it's all cold and junk and the thought of actually going out for a run is just in no way, shape, or form appealing. So.. there's only one thing to do.. Sign up for another half.

I don't have winter cycling gear. Hopefully by spring time I'll start to put some miles back on the bike.

Tell us about the new to you road bike.

Did 3.5 today. Been extending my runs incrementally without any sort of goal in mind.

After giving it a little bit of thought, I'm going to shoot for 10 miles.
I've done it one time before in my life and it nearly killed me.

Hoping if I work at it more methodically and incrementally than last time, I can get there in a healthy manor.

What is this "winter" that you speak of? :?

:clown:

I found a vintage Bianchi racer with Campagnola group sets in a friends garage. I was simply admiring it because I like certain old bikes. My Buddy wanted it out of his garage as it's too small for him, he gave it to me without me asking, it was his late uncle's. It just happens to fit me perfectly, so I installed an updated saddle and clipless peddles. I may swap out the 27 inch wheels for modern 700cc if I can keep the current break calipers. It actually rides very nicely and I like the feedback it provides. Given the mostly flat lands I ride, it's highly geared 12 speeds are enough and it hold good momentum. I'm not sure exactly what I have yet, but I do know that another fellow on a classic Raleigh racer was absolutely drooling over it when I stopped for a break to watch the waves. But anyway, I really like it. I rode the 25 miles with no trouble yesterday and while not as fast and gear changing not as convenient as a modern racer, it beats the heck out of the mountain bike under those conditions and good enough for my non racing needs. I felt like I was flying in comparison to what I'm used to. Most of the time the roadies fly by me on my MT if they're serious at all. Yesterday, I was keeping up and even setting the pace with a couple of guys who hung out on my six for a few miles.

You should train for a half marathon. Seriously. If you can do 10, you can do 13.1.

My goal, fitness wise, is to maintain myself such that I can run a half marathon pretty much whenever I want. Most non-competitive training plans for that distance will top you out at a 10 mile run. I find that a 10 miler on the weekend plus two other runs throughout the week from 3 to 5 miles is a sweet spot. I'd like to do more if I had the time, but those runs keep me where I want to be. I'm not killing the half (I did my last one in just under 2 hours), but I figure if I can keep myself here then if I want to really kick ass at a half marathon I could bump it up a bit when I can devote more time to it.

The 10 miler will let you get in your long, slow, "easy" miles.. the 3 miler is usually hit a bit harder (or even swapped out for a set of intervals at the track), and the 5 miler should be like a tempo run.. or "comfortably hard"

Working up to the distances isn't hard, just takes time. Incrementally, like you said, is the the way to go. Try not to increase your total weekly mileage by more than 10% each week and hold back on increasing a week if you're struggling with the previous week's distance.
