Favorite Christmas Movies

Post by GScott » Wed Nov 19, 2014 11:23 pm

This is inspired by a post (not naming poster) on Facebook where said poster admits openly that he watched a Christmas movie--A WEEK BEFORE THANKSGIVING! Now that isn't the issue, neither the fact that he watched Muppett Christmas Carol. What is the issue is that it got me in the Christmas movie mood. Now that's just plain mean. So following is the result as I thought about my favorite Christmas movies. They are (in no definitive order):
"The Family Man," with Nicolas Cage; :chili:
"Christmas with the Kranks" Tim Allen :chili: :taco:
"The Santa Clause" with Tim Allen;
"Ernest Saves Christmas" Jim Varney;
"Jingle all the Way" with Arnold and Sinbad; :bacon:
"The Bishop's Wife" (where the sherry never runs out) with Cary Grant and Loretta Young; :taco:
"It's a Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed; :cheese:
"Home Alone" and “Home Alone 2” with McCauley Calkin;
"Polar Express" with Tom Hanks doing so much; :bacon: :cheese:
Always an iteration of Scrooge and Tiny Tim has to be watched.
We never saw the Muppet Christmas Carol. Will have to add that to the list.

I like most all of them.

For shame! No one has mentioned Miracle on 34th Street.

This. Plus I like several versions of A Christmas Carol.

Honorable mention to Die Hard.

Mrs. Gabriel and I watch National Lampoons Christmas Vacation every. single. year. Usually the Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving as soon as we get the decorations up and the kids are in bed. Adult beverages and Christmas Vacation, it's a grand tradition. :D

Image

I usually say that It's a Wonderful Life and White Christmas are up there as favorites as well, but in recent years I just haven't had the emotional energy to invest in It's a Wonderful Life. We have a restored 1930's ish movie theater in downtown Normal that usually plays it on Christmas Eve. We went and saw it every year for a brief span when I was in high school or so. Fantastic watching old movies on the big screen.

I forgot to include The Nativity Story. Great movie (if a little slow for the kids) that we've been watching every Christmas Eve as a family.

Ah yes, White Christmas! Excellent! Let's not forget Holiday Inn, either---the Christmas movie that lent it's name to a motel chain!
What makes these late 1940's movies so poignant is they address the concerns of a humanity recovering from the grip of world war.

Ah-- While you were sleeping is a good one. There is that scene where the newspaper boy throws a paper from his bike and spills out on the ice. Something about that scene sticks with you.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town
Frosty the Snowman
Little Drummer Boy
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

These are TV specials and not movies, but they are the ones I grew up with and therefore have a special place in my heart.

Miracle on 34th Street
White Christmas
It's a Wonderful Life
The Santa Clause
and more recently Rise of the Guardians
