You can't go wrong with Charlie Brown

A Christmas Story
Gremlins (watched it Tuesday)
It's a Wonderful Life
A Miracle on 34th Street
We have a few variations of A Christmas Carol
Frosty the Snowman
Rudolph
It sounded better when the voices in my head were saying it.

we picked up DVD's of all the Charlie Brown classics. Our holiday movie season starts on Reformation Day with The Great Pumpkin. We have about 50 movies we try to watch from then up through Christmas.

We like Christmas movies. We have quite a few. So rather than just run down the list, I'm limiting this to the "it isn't Christmas without these." We typically watch MANY MORE than those listed below.

White Christmas is currently in the player because it's the just-out 60th anniversary bluray and I needed a Christmas fix in this cold snap. The real Christmas movies will start on Thanksgiving Day, with a put-it-on-repeat-while-I'm-cooking A Christmas Story. The Christmas Eve tradition at this house requires Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas, The Bishop's Wife, and Alastair Sim's Scrooge. Throughout the rest of the season we have to enjoy The Grinch, Scrooged, Love Actually, and A Muppet Christmas Carol. That's the absolute bare minimum, and we always go w-a-y beyond that.

We went through our movies and discovered we didn't own as many Christmas movies as we should. But we wanted to stuff our season full of Christmas movie cheer so I offered that we improvise with "non-traditional" Christmas movies.

-The Lord of the Rings - Elves? check. Wise men on a journey? check. Star of wonder? How else does one blind an evil spider?

-The Empire Strikes Back - flippin Hoth is a flippin winter wonderland! If "Let it Snow" can be a Christmas song, then Empire Strikes Back can be a Christmas movie.

-Jackie Chan: First Strike - sure it's about a kung-fu cop stopping terrorists and it's mostly in Australia... but there is snow. Stretching the "Let it Snow" principle here, but what gives you that special Christmas feeling better than watching Jackie Chan snowboard from a cliff onto a helicopter and then jumping from said helicopter into a frozen lake just before it's blown up by a rocket?

-Frozen - I didn't technically recommend this, but when I offered the "Let it Snow" Principle to the family as an argument for Empire and First Strike...this got thrown in my face... you win some, you lose some. I was going to argue, but I let it go...

-The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe - I mean, it's about Jesus people! and it even has flippin Father Christmas! This movie is more Christmas than Miracle on 34th Street.
Christmas is Yule, dummies! We're doing the same thing, just better!

Christmas Carol (George C. Scott version and Muppet version)
Miracle on 34th Street (prefer the old one, but the newer one is okay)
Charlie Brown
The Bishop's Wife (Cary Grant version)
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (not that Jim Carrey crap)
The Nativity Story
Die Hard (not so much number 2)
Lethal Weapon

There are others that I'll watch every year, but those are the important ones.

I generally avoid the Home Alones and I absolutely avoid Elf.
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are not.

The Odessa File. Perry Como sings a great Christmas song during the opening scenes. It would sound great on the sax!

After I realized we didn't have that many Christmas movies on hand (see above from 2 years ago) we nabbed a few. Home Alone 1 & 2 among them. Since then they've become huge hits with the kids. I hadn't watched them in forever and as an adult (I'm basically Macaulay Culkin's age) I've been able to appreciate them in a new way. Daniel Stern rivals any scream queen's scream in Hollywood. Plus the soundtrack is awesome. This will be watched multiple times throughout the season.

A few others on the must watch list:
Christmas Vacation
Jim Carrey's Grinch (we watched the new cartoon...it was eh.)
Elf
The Muppet Christmas Carol (I usually watch this on Christmas Eve)
The last few Christmas Eves, during Santa's work, the mrs and I will watch Christmas episodes from TV shows. Mostly from The Office.

These might slip in if they're on
A Christmas Story
Jingle All the Way
The usual holiday specials, Charlie Brown, Rudolph, etc.
A newer Christmas movie I've enjoyed is Daddy's Home 2.
Christmas is Yule, dummies! We're doing the same thing, just better!

The Hallmark channel, and my wife's commitment to it, may have killed Christmas movies for me altogether.

Yes! How'd I forget that one! I actually watched it last night to rectify my mistake.

Another addendum for a film I egregiously left out of my must watch list: Ernest Saves Christmas.
