Re: Whiskey
Mrs. Joegoat got me a bottle of 1792 for Christmas. One of my favorites. I'm not a fan of the new packaging, but delicious as ever!

Nursing the last ounce from a bottle of George Dickel Rye. I may have a glass of McClelland's Highland Single Malt to follow it.

Re: Whiskey
How is it? By chance have you ever tasted the C.R. Hand Selected Barrel (also a rye), for comparison?

Re: Whiskey
For Christmas, the Mrs. bought me a variety of small bottles to sample. I'm enjoying the adventure.
1st up: Chivas Regal -- 12 year blended scotch whisky. It was quite good. I liked it-- a good first opening.
A night later: Glenlivet 12 year single scotch Whisky Double Oak (greenish label). It too was quite good and noteworthy. It was right up there with the first.
Each of these first two-- worth going for a larger bottle.
Tonight.. a couple nights later.. I'm trying the little plastic bottle of Johnny Walker Black Label.
Afraid I'm not liking this one so much... I taste the sweet overtones and the bit of the char.... and then something that swims of "band aid"... semi-sterile. Not as awful as that Glenlivit Reserve (that tasted like the hallway of a hospital -- it did ok on mixing but ought not to have to be mixed at that price offering).
The adventures shall continue and I will work through the Johnny BLack label sample. The flavor and impression brought me to post about it.

Re: Whiskey
Under the right circumstances it can be the best you've ever had. A nice drink of JWR over ice in a short wide mouthed cocktail glass ...

Re: Whiskey
Is a three fourths full bottle of Johnie Walker Red an appropriate birthday gift?

Re: Whiskey
I would say not, but really it depends on whose birthday and the situation. And the friend.

Re: Whiskey
Admiral Nelson's Black Patch spiced black rum.
My wife got this cheap bottle several weeks ago and hates it. Being the nice husband and rot gut that I am, I've volunteered to drink it.
After several glasses on the rocks, I still couldn't place the familiar taste.
Tonight, it has come together! Eggnog. The nose, the front, and the finish is very reminiscent of eggnog. I typically don't drink spiked eggnog so this is odd, but interesting.

Re: Whiskey
Sample from Christmas-- one I was concerned about as I have learned I do not like IPA beer (had a really, really bitter/hoppy to the moon IPA from a bottle once and set it back down with an intention to avoid IPA ever after): Jameson -- Irish Whiskey Caskmates -- IPA Edition..
It's a really nice Jameson and I think the IPA cask pushes it a touch to the sweeter side and back... a curious note and pretty nice taste. Color me surprised and pleased. I'd buy that.
