The only answer is to stop buying fly boxes.

I miss flyfishing terribly, but I genuinely think I may miss tying flies almost as much. My current environment and aging eyesight aren't conducive, but maybe I'll get back to it just for funsies some day.

A tidy box of flies, like a tidy tying desk, is ephemeral. I sacrificed a couple of the ones on the top-right row to the river gods last night.

Yo SandPiper! I know fly tiers who have completely decoupled tying flies and actually fishing them. I use a bright desk lamp and the highest powered reading glasses Walmart sells. Do it.

I’ve been seeing some flies that look so good I wonder if they can actually appeal to fish! Others are so pretty and time consuming to make that it’s a shame to get them wet and chewed on.

No doubt about it. I’m a fisherman first.

Question: What flies would you pick if you were going to a lake to fish trout. Most trout are stocked, some have been in the lake a while, but some are wild as some spawning happens there in the streams that lead to the lake. The tail waters from the lake have great wild trout fishing, albeit tiny trout, but I’m not fishing there this time. Most trout are caught on power bait and various spoons or spinners by conventional anglers. Fly fishers are rare there and I’ve never paid attention to what they used. But I’ve heard that fly fishing is effective there, but not sure by what flies. I’m going to a mountain cabin with friends. It’s not really a fishing trip, we’re just taking the kids fishing. But because I’m all about fly fishing lately, I’m trying to figure out how to approach this.

I was thinking black and olive wooly buggers and midges. Keep in mind, I’m just starting out in fly fishing. Yeah, I’ll probably take an aquarium net and see what’s in the water, but are there any typical go-to flies that often produce in places like that?

Yup!
Weight the buggers or use a sink-tip line.

Rabbit strip leeches are great, too.

I just ran spellcheck in an AutoCAD drawing and it wanted to change MIG to Midge.

So... I’m sitting here at my tying desk deciding what I should tie, and it occurs to me that someone (FredS?) suggested another fly swap a while back. Anyone still interested in doing that? Summers are busy, but it sounds good to me. I might could be talked into doing the gathering and shipping, as long as everyone pays their own. Should we do a theme?

Well alright, I’ll start a new thread sometime this week. In the meantime, more Spey fly experiments:

Back to the bench with terrestrial and deer hair practice. Getting better, slowly.

Did you dope that turkey feather wing or just tie it in? I don't have the patience or foresight to put flexament on feathers so I tried some uv resin once and it didn't work at all.

A while back I took a couple turkey wing feathers and gave the back side a light coating of my daughter's hair spray every time I thought about it. It's not perfect, but it helps hold them together a little. That tie-in is probably the best I've ever done and really makes me wish I had given more thought to the body.

I use a cork hung on my lanyard as a 'drying patch' and it was getting pretty crowded so I removed the flies and put them away in their boxes. Except these three. They were literally rode hard and put away wet.
