That and the pheasant are way cool...I have a tough time making my flies look like a blob of fuzz on a hook

Gabriel - Need something to work on during your recovery?

You're welcome.
Nice! I was just wondering if I felt well enough to tie flies this afternoon. Been a slow process...

Recovering feels slow, but it has been steadily forward. I've been at my desk a few nights this week and I'm working on larger patterns that I can hopefully mount and sell at our annual fund raising auction next month. This one is one of my own design, I just need a decent name for it. Something to do with fire or flame would be nice, as that is what I had in mind while designing it.

Black spey hook size 5
Black 3/0 thread
copper wire rib
pale blue silk floss body
pheasant aftershaft "dubbing"
blue/rust pheasant rump hackle
red, yellow, white bucktail wing

This is the first attempt and I think it turned out ok. Future versions may leave off the white bucktail. Any other suggestions welcome.

Also got this book for my birthday last week. Should be a great addition to my slowly growing collection. :)

The subtitle is a little misleading (which is good) because it mostly focuses on trout flies as well as flies for bass and salmon. So far my only complaint is... how can book on buck tail flies published in 2016 not mention Bob Clouser? I dunno.

First (successful) fly pattern from my new book. An A.S. Trude with gray squirrel tail. Hackle isn’t quite soft enough, but should look fine in the water. Tied on a #8 streamer hook.

Classic streamer!

You can “soften” that hackle a bit by rolling the streamer between your thumb and forefinger at the base of the hackle.
Not the same as a nice, soft hen hackle, but the hackle will lay down a bit and move more in the water.

Cool way to store them but something tells me this hurts a bit in pet sales down the line.

Finally finished up a couple barnwood display boxes for our fund raising auction this Saturday. I'm not sure I've landed on the exact line up of flies to go in the boxes, but at least they're done and can be photographed and added to the list.

Y'all should come on out and bid! It's only a short drive to central IL...

Thanks! I keep shuffling the flies in there, looking for just the right combination. Hoping they bring a little money. Last years display sold alright, so... we’ll see.

Relaxing a bit at my tying desk, working on a salmon style fly for striped bass. Not a bad start, but it seems to be a bit overdone. Funny how taking pictures highlights the flaws. Wing too long and a bit heavy handed with the red hackle.
