Favorite smoking weather?

Post by JohnnyMcPiperson » Fri Jul 28, 2017 9:36 am

Mine is summer rain or a nice sunny fall morning with the cool crisp air. Something about sitting on the porch listening to the potter patter of rain drops while sending up clouds of smoke, it's just downright peaceful.

I complain about it lots, but I'm starting to think -40 is seriously the best.

There fixed it for ya! -40?! Seriously?! What do you smoke in like 10 layers and a winter sleeping bag?

In the shop with my snow suit and propane heater close by. So really the shop warms up to -20c when I'm done and it's pretty enjoyable. For an hour or two at least :)

Before I opened the thread I thought, "in the rain." I do love to smoke a pipe on a rainy day. The only weather I don't like to smoke in is cold winter weather. Any other weather will do. I even don't mind smoking in the heat and humidity as long as it's not excessively humid.

Like today - cool and rainy.
Second favorite - a gentle snow.

Cool weather is nice, but time of day is also special. I do enjoy my GH Brown Flake (unscented) with my morning coffee, and a good VaPer with happy hour in the evening. No matter the weather

Now that you mention it, I do particularly enjoy smoking while walking in the rain with an umbrella. Our little dog loves being in the rain, so I often get some good time in.

I don't know that I've ever smoked in the snow. Too little opportunity.

Weather is secondary or more to occasion and moment, but I enjoy a pipe more in cooler weather, and a light rain too perhaps.

A dreary November. Everything's better in November. I wish I could find a place where it was November all of the time.

That's exactly how I feel about late October/early November

Oh yeah? I don't think so.

Tell them about the moisture, gurgling, and odd flavourless smoke.

LOL!

The problem at low temps. is that it's hard to keep the pipe warm enough to get a normal smoke. Even the bowl isn't really warm to touch. The shank cools down. As the shank cools you get more condensation. This is progressive with colder temps. The smoke loses flavour as it cools too. So you have a gurgling mess that has little flavour. It's right about 0 F or -18C when it starts to become a real problem too. I've played with neoprene covers to keep the shank warm and it sorta works for a while. This is walking outside while 'enjoying' a smoke and drawing as we usually do. Only a newb in Winterpeg could say this is good.
