Every time I look at a bulldog or a Rhodesian I think of Rusty. Every time. I think of the many times we argued and debated over what defined those styles of pipes. Some might think, "Who cares? It's just a pipe." He cared. A lot.

One of the most passionate rebukes I ever got here came from Rusty in a PM when he thought I was leading a newbie astray with my definitions of the shapes. It was a little unreal at the time, but I ended up taking it for what it really was - Rusty was caring for the newbie. I appreciated that and he was sharpening me.

And Erinmore Flake? I can't even look at that tobacco without hearing Rusty, in my own made up voice, calling it a "tart" of a tobacco.

Thanks, Rusty.

Strange, isn't it? The longer this place goes on the more this is going to happen.

True. It is the natural order of things. It still saddens us though.

I missed this thread when I popped back on (things a re bit different). I found out from CodeMonkey today and looked for the news; I had thought this was about a broken pipe incident involving Rusty's collection or summat!

Blow me down. Although stunned and immenseley saddened, I am privileged to have wandered into this grotto where Rusty held dominion on pipes, tobacco, science and miscellany and will miss our drinks at Beelzebub's bar (Rusty's choice). I am still not sure he didn't believe I was going to paddle down the Hudson and claim you lot back for the Crown; it seemed to tickle him, so I may yet do so in his memory.

Farewell, old erudite, ornery, mental jack-jumper. I'll have a Doombar at the Angel in Wainfleet tonight in your memory, now they have closed Beelzebub's. Feel free to sip over my shoulder, any time you like.

Was just inundated with a flood of thoughts of Rusty. I suppose it's been about a year? Hard to believe. I think of and pray for his family often. And I sure miss him.

He has been on my mind a lot lately. Yeah, it’s been almost a year now. I truly miss him and when certain topics come up, I imagine what sort of response Rusty would give.

Indeed, Rusty and Monarchists both, good dudes, contributed so much in the time they were here. They left a hole in our little community.

Well, it's been a year. I received an email last year from Rusty's wife to let me know of his death the week previous. Through information, we determined that he died on the 22nd of December (a Friday last year) while reading a book on Einstein at home. He had smoked half a bowl of some Doug-type-loved tobacco in his hexagonal shaped Calich pipe.

I miss him still and he's never far from my thoughts as I smoke my pipe or when smoking one of his. I have a little picture of him that I have set up in my pipe cabinet so I get to say 'hello' to him every day too.

Did you know that some of you through your purchases from me helped to raise $12,000 for his wife and kids? Well, yes, you did. Thank you all for that. For those of you who have one of his pipes or tobaccos, I hope that you will remember what he meant to you and this board. He could be acerbic and cutting at times, but always passionately and mischievously opinionated about his pipes and tobaccos. We have to give him that. But he was a special mentor to me and I will always remember that.

One of Doug's jars of tobacco. The grade 14 Calich beside that, along with his Le Nuvole pipe that takes a Virginia tobacco to wonderful levels; and my Ardor pipe beside that.

Picture of Doug I took at one of his backyard barbecue's around 2004.

Raised a glass of scotch to the ol' feller today. God bless you Doug.

As a new addition to CPS in 2018 I never got to interact with the guy, but I've seen all the love y'all have for him - and not just in this thread. There's random "I miss Rusty" type remarks all over this place. Even though he was gone before I arrived, I've enjoyed reading his posts and benefited from them as I've perused old threads. I may not properly be able to say I miss a guy I never knew, but I wish he was still around for me to get to know him. I can see he was a really special guy who brought a lot to CPS.

I have some very special scotch that I pour on very special occasions.

And some rare McClelland 40th Anniversary in a Rhox "dub dog" by JMG.

I shall pour a few drams right now, and toast to Rusty. He brought us much joy.

May we all strive to attain heaven so that we may gain eternity with Rusty in our company. Amen. He is missed and prayers for him always.
