Re: Broken Pipe - Rusty
I'm pretty sure that photo of Rusty tending the grill is the only one of him on the net. So thanks for that CA. And for breaking the horrible news to us in the first place and then being our conduit to his family. Offering prayers of comfort to them and you as this anniversary dredges up feelings of sadness. I pray our fond remembrances outrun the feelings of loss and sadness a little more each day/month/year.

Rusty's sudden passing sure has made me more conscious of my own frailty, as he and I were about the same age I think.

Re: Broken Pipe - Rusty
Been smoking more of Rusty's pipes lately. Still miss him very much.

This was his Savinelli Autograph that he bought in 1974 back in Vancouver, BC (pipe is from 1972) at The Bay downtown. The tobacco was gifted to me by his widow. GL Pease "Raven's Wing".
Anyone else smoking their pipes from Rusty?

Well dang.
Talk about slow on the uptake ... I saw Jester's post and wondered what was up with Rusty. Then I went looking at the beginning of the thread. He's been gone for a year & a half. I had no idea. I thought he'd finally got pissed at all the Christians in here and rustyquit. But no.
I have no words...
Well I do, but ... you know...

Yeah....still miss him.
His wife and daughter have just moved from Ottawa to BC to be closer to more family. We had their going away party a couple weeks ago. I got to meet more of his acquaintances at the party. It was sad to say goodbye, but at least in this instance, I could.

I miss Rusty. I'm pretty sure that he thought I was nuts.
We had many good back and forth PM with each other over the years.
I learned a lot from the guy.
RIP my internet friend, hope we meet again someday.

I admit that I’ve been wondering what Rusty would say about the storm Area 51 trend.

Re: Broken Pipe - Rusty
I missed the posts in December and so just saw the picture. Now I finally know what "uncle Rusty" looked like!
I just smoked some of his tobacco the other month, but keep his pipe tucked away for use only when I'm writing, which unfortunately had not been for sometime now.

Re: Broken Pipe - Rusty
Forgive me, but I'm reading this thread for the very first time. I came upon it looking for Rusty; wanting to tell him about my Savinelli Minuto - a pipe that I thought he may not have known about; half hoping he'd tell me its not a real pipe, but a "transition device" or something like that I imagined he'd say. I popped over to his profile to see when he last posted and noticed the moniker, and my heart sank. I searched and found this thread for confirmation.
Rusty had enhanced my enjoyment of pipes & tobaccos in a rather singular way - like no one other person has. He possessed a breadth and depth of knowledge about pipes & tobaccos that I had not before encountered. We both hailed from the good'le a.s.p. days, though we didn't know each other then. Wish we had. He is missed.
Thanks for all the intel calvinistanglican, and especially for the picture of Rusty - that made me smile.
Wasn't that the absolute truth!

Hard to believe it's been almost 2 years. was thinking of him while I was looking at the secret Santa thread. His statements of Jesus Clause popped into my head, lol.

Re: Broken Pipe - Rusty
Yes, two years. Still miss him and I'm thinking about him all the time. He is always on my mind when I have a pipe or tobacco nearby.
His widow and children have moved from Ontario out to BC - Kamloops for the year, and then moving on to Vancouver Island. They have family out there and no one here now that Rusty has died. They moved away last summer and I was at the going away party for them at the house. I got to meet others who stepped in to help sell off and distribute Rusty's earthly belongings. He had about as much photographic equipment and supplies as he did pipe paraphernalia. I met the fellow who had the task of moving and selling all of the photo stuff....he, like I, performed magic in getting money for Rusty's widow.
So, if you knew Rusty, lift a bowl in his honour this Christmas - go back and read through some of his posts like I did this morning. I was reading about the whole "Bulldog" vs. "Rhodesian" debate......don't start THAT one again. lol
Merry Christmas,
Eric

Re: Broken Pipe - Rusty
I have hardly been smoking at all lately. Rusty would scold me for that!
One of our dogs died in his sleep last night, so there is a melancholy mood around the place. Giovanni (aka Gigio) was a poodle-shepherd mix, who greeted me every morning with howls and songs. So quiet this morning; I miss Gigio's music.
I'm reflecting on people who have come and gone from my life, feeling thankful for their presence for a time.
Today I will break my smoking fast with a bowl of something very English, in the Butz Choquin that I purchased from Rusty's estate.
