Broken Pipe - Rusty

Good evening everyone,

It is with a very heavy heart that I write to you to tell you about the passing of my pipe mentor & friend, Rusty.

I was notified of Rusty's death by his wife. I received her email today which told me of his passing. He died at Christmastime of a massive heart attack. Typical of Rusty, he was reading a book on Einstein at the time of his death.

I met Rusty back in 2005 here in Ottawa at a pipe club meeting I was holding at my apartment. Rusty showed up with a great sack full of pipes - his "show and tell" bag as it turned out. I remember showing him a fine Peterson 303 pipe I had bought recently. He reached into his bag and pulled out a HUGE pipe that almost looked the same. It was a Peterson House pipe and I had never seen one like that before!!

Over time, as I got to know Rusty, I and a few select members of the Ottawa Pipe group were invited to his house for the odd meeting. We'd share tobacco, stories, blend tobacco, admire our pipes, and enjoy some fine food and beverages.

On a more personal note, I moved away from Ottawa and kept up a daily correspondence with Rusty. My work as a parish priest at the time was starting to consume more of my time. I sensed and knew that Rusty needed to have an outlet to express and dump the MASSIVE amounts of pipe knowledge he had crammed in that noggin of his. I introduced him to this site. For whatever reason; a reason unknown to me, this staunch atheist planted his flag in the middle of this group of pipe smokers and declared himself to be "home".

I am still in shock as I write this. His wife expressed her desire for me to inform you all on her behalf of his death. She wasn't sure whether to have her own email thrown up here or not. If you wish to reach her, you can send your messages to me and I will forward them on. I think Rusty would have liked that.

Rusty was a very private person. He was knowledgeable, opinionated, educated, passionate. He was generous and thoughtful; patient with us 'newbies' and was bewilderingly amused at some of our thoughts or opinions when we dared express them to him! He was an all around great guy who could go on for hours on certain topics. I for one will dearly miss him. I dare say that I will never light another pipe as long as I live without thinking of the man who taught me so much about the hobby and everything about it.

Rusty, I miss you profoundly already.

Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ei.

Though I'm appropriately sorry to hear this news, please tell me this ain't our "Rusty". :prayin:

It sure does sound like our Rusty. I've got a sinking feeling. Wow. Sorrow and more sorrow.

Yes it does. This is unreal. He was such a lively guy. This is a hit in the gut.

Rusty, man, we will miss you.

I pray God's Word penetrated our friend in ways maybe we were not aware of.

Please, sir, express our members's condolences to Rusty's family. Would you find out for me if there is a charity that the family has picked for which we can donate in his memory?

Did you notice his delving into theology over the last few months? There's hope.

I most certainly will. His wife is being shown all these comments and any PM's that I'm getting from you all. I will get back to you when I receive any news.
