What is the proper pronunciation of Jambalaya?

Post by Hovannes » Sun Feb 11, 2018 4:53 pm

Jambalaya, I've read is an invention of Spaniards who came to the New World, as opposed to Creoles which would refer to people of European(French or Spanish) or African ancestry who were born in the New World specifically the West Indies. The Spaniards, I'vereadontheinternetsoitmustbetrue. wanted to make traditional Paella but due to conditions had to use local ingredients, hence Jambalaya. Now I've heard it called JAM-ball-eye-ya and JUMBO-laya and a few other variations, but if this is truly a Spanish concoction, wouldn't be properly HOM-ball-eye-ah or WHOM-ball-eye-ya, something similar with a "j" pronounced like an "h?"

Neither. It's pronounced somewhat akin to "Gevalia".
