Please review the rules for politics in the Standard of Conduct: app.php/rules

Political discussions, for now, can occur on Slack.
No one is discussing politics. The topic is how the modern mood of hatred and bigotry has killed our ability to laugh at ourselves.

Nope. That's not it at all.

app.php/rules
Politics - We want to keep it friendly and fun here on CPS. While Political discussions may start out fine at first, these discussions historically melt into a steaming pile of anger and hurt feelings. Political threads have made it nearly impossible to maintain the type of atmosphere that properly defines CPS, as such Political discussions are forbidden as of 21August2017 permanently.

This ban includes posts, comments, avatars, signatures, and so on containing political content in any form. Such expression of Political content within CPS is prohibited. Moderator interpretation shall hold sway in all instances. Dispute with Moderator decisions may only occur via PMs to the Moderators or via the CPS Admins email link. See also the Moderators rule.

The single exception to this rule are political discussions surrounding tobacco policies and legislation. This is the only exception. These discussions are allowed in the Fellowship Forum.

Violations of the ban will be met with the Progressive Discipline process.

Example topics to be avoided include, but are not limited to:
  • Breaking News unrelated to Pipes, Tobacco, or Religion outside of the acceptable posts within the Theology Forum
  • Abortion (this is too much of a Politicized topic to allow any sort of acceptable usage on CPS during the ban time period - there are no exceptions). Pro Life versus Pro Choice discussions are encouraged to remain civil and leveled
  • Government Spending and Debt
  • Elections
  • The Right or Wrongness of Protests or Civil Unrest
  • US Partisan Politics, Pro/Con viewpoints of the standing Administration and/or Government, and Political Platforms
  • Local, State, Federal, and International Politics unrelated to Pipes, Tobacco, or Religion outside of the acceptable posts within the Theology Forum
  • Sex and Sexuality

So we can't even mention an event where the current administration was in attendance?

I have to laugh at myself- (as per the thread title). I posted to provide support for a recent Tuttle message and inadvertently stirred up a Del.

Del- we know where you're coming from. Say no more, so no more-- a wink is as good as a nod.

Back on topic:

The Simpsons show has proven that they can do “funny” for decades on end. All of a sudden, SJW’s have discovered that Apu is an offensive character.

Matt Groening is standing his ground. He’s not letting the puritanical mob kill the fun.

People love to pretend that they are offended.”

Don’t blame Uncle Bob. You all know that I am constantly tempted to comment on current events.

Rob Schnieder had some very potent tweets recently-- not just advertising his show. He's criticizing comedy for lacking respect and a decent punchline in the SNL riffs.

They are captured in this link: http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/20 ... ation.html

I found it very interesting because it wasn't political because he'd poke fun at either party leanings. He had this point about the environment:

"Much late night comedy is less about being funny and more about Indoctrination by comedic disposition," Schneider continued on Twitter. "People aren't really laughing at it as much as cheering on the rhetoric. "
Holy smokes! Spot on! Just the kind of thing I was thinking.

I trust the admins are pm'ing those who run afoul of the prohibition on political speech so they know where their offense lies. I wish they (Bob) would let everyone know what he's reading as a political post. Just for future reference mind you.

If Bob has to moderate one of Del’s posts, just trust that it needed to be moderated.

Don't be too self-critical Del. We're all figuring out the new landscape as we go along. Us older guys (and the brash youngsters like tuttle) are having more difficulty with it than others.

It really is kind of a bugger. There are several topics that I've been intending to discuss, but I've not yet pulled the trigger because, even though the topics are acceptable within the ToS, I feel that it will inevitably bleed into something the culture is continuously outraged about and I'm not sure if that's covered under the 'politics' category. That was my initial concern with an outright ban, that at any point any topic can become a political hot potato worthy of falling under that banner. I started this thread extremely aware of what I was writing in order to steer clear of political topics and keep anything cultural/political general and vague. I don't know if there is a page of this thread yet free from some kind of policing, so I think FredS's concern is valid.

Bob did not moderate my post because the topic was too political.

Let's just say that I used too many buzz words, such that CPS might show up on a google search by anyone who is looking for an excuse to cause trouble.

We don't want to end up like Starbucks.

When hugo took on the mantle of Moderator, he had to work me down to his tolerance. (I can be pretty thick.)

Bob is stricter than hugo, and he has his reasons. We'll all work that out as we go.

Just remember that we are all on the same team, and our common goal is to keep CPS a fun place for all of us.
===============================================

My advice, as one who appreciates the patience of our Mod Squad:
- Don't walk on eggshells, but just use common sense.
- If your post triggers a mod, you can probably figure out why and adjust your behavior.
- If you can't figure out why, then ask the Mod in a PM to help you understand how that post might put CPS at risk.

There is a discipline procedure for folks who are intentionally troublesome. Don't be that guy.

The man, the legend, Norm MacDonald was scratched from being a guest on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon yesterday for comments he made in an interview about the #MeToo movement and expressing sympathy for friends Rosanne Barr and Louis C.K.

MacDonald took to twitter and apologized for the statements made:
“Out of sensitivity to our audience and in light of Norm Macdonald’s comments in the press today, The Tonight Show has decided to cancel his appearance on Tuesday’s telecast,” NBC said in a statement

The ironic part is that in the same interview MacDonald went to bat for Jimmy Fallon for getting the same treatment Norm is getting:
What sets Norm MacDonald Has a Show apart from the current wave of comedian-hosted talk shows?

I decided very early on there can be nothing topical. Ever since Jon Stewart, late-night hosts have all been forced to become political pundits, you know? Even down to Jimmy Fallon. And he is derided for his treatment of Donald Trump.

Do you think Fallon has been unfairly criticized?

Completely. He is just all about fun and silliness. That's what his audience wants. And then to be maligned for quote-unquote humanizing Trump. Funny, I thought he was a human. If you have the nominee to be president on your show and he is your guest, then he is your guest. Don't have him on the show if you don't want him.
Norm MacDonald is maybe the best talk show guest ever. The Tonight Show scratched one of the funniest people alive, for nothing but comments. Late Night is dead. Long live Norm MacDonald Has a Show.

MacDonald is funny. Smart. Irreverent. But mostly funny. Colbert and Kimmel - and Fallon to a lesser degree - need a room full of writers to make them funny. Even then, they often come off as spiteful or mean instead of funny. MacDonald is funny on his own and off the cuff. He jokes about everyone without acting like he hates anyone.

I grew up in a church with Ned Flanders. Down to the mustache. But so did a bunch of people I assume, which makes it so fun-diddly-unny.

Kind of stinks about Apu though. At some point earlier this year (see Del's post above) it seemed like the Groening and the Simpsons writers were going to stick to their guns, but for whatever reason now, they've caved. The article I linked to makes it seem like a business move, an easily avoidable controversy by just not ever using the side character again.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1v1qjubwpU0

EDIT: I just read that a producer for the Simpsons, while not denying they're dropping Apu, said that the person who revealed that Apu was being dropped doesn't speak for the show, which might mean there are some internal divisions and a decision hasn't been made yet. Here's hoping they still stick to their guns.
