CPS Fly Swap 2018

Post by Gabriel » Tue Jul 10, 2018 9:13 am

The time has come! I have shamelessly cut and pasted FredS's post from our last fly swap and put my name in for his. I still like the idea of doing a CPS "gift tin" like we did last time, so we'll keep that. If the poll results are any indication (which we all know they rarely are), we have 7 people involved again. I'd be happy to include more if you want to jump in.

We will do another "freestyle" swap this time as that seems to be the best fit for our varied community. We have fishermen from CA to SC represented here, so keep that in mind when selecting a fly to contribute. Or don't, it's a freestyle exchange after all.

Please contact me ASAP with your name, address, and what fly you will be tying. Once we have our finalized list, I will post a deadline and we'll get going!

1. Fly swaps are an opportunity for tiers to exchange flies, it's usually done on a 1 fly for 1 fly basis. A member will post a thread about a swap with general guidelines including number of tiers and a deadline for when flies need to be in, the original poster is usually called the swapmeister. Once the deadline is set, other members post about their desire to participate and the swapmeister will add them to the list.

2. Mail your finished flies to Gabriel (his address will be sent to you via pm). Use some sort of crush resistant packaging. A small box, tobacco tin, or something along those lines will work great. Your box will be re-used by the swapmeister to return your flies so don't send them in just an envelope. Send a few dollars for return postage. Don't stiff the swapmeister.

3. Flies should be toe-tagged with the name of the pattern and your CPS screen name so we know who tied what. A toe tag is usually just a small strip of paper that you stick on to each fly over the barb so it won't fall off. If you tie with barbless hooks then figure out another way to securely attach the tag. Include the recipe and history or a favorite memory or story for the pattern if you'd like to share (these stories/recipes/etc can be shared in this thread as the swap unfolds).

5. We have 7 people in this swap. I'd like each participant to tie 8 flies - one for each swapper and one to be added to a boxed set we'll sell at auction on CPS. I'll split them up and return a complete set (including one of their own) to each participant. I'll box the extra set in a tobacco tin I have lying around unless someone wants to provide something more special.

6. Once you decide what fly you'll make for the swap, PM me and I'll post it next to your name at the top of this post. It's perfectly OK if two or more tiers choose to submit the same type of fly.

That ought to do it. Get yer fingers limbered up and start tying.

For some reason I can't figure out how to edit the original post, so I'll just update as we go. Current list of participants:

Bloodhound - "Stripped Gear" (a wet fly from elk fuzz and partridge or grouse)
FredS - "Lolita" - a mayfly emerger invented by durangopipe
JimVH - undecided
Dlibbon - undecided
Gabriel - probably a ginger feather-winged streamer of my own make, but will wait and see what else we have

Is everyone ok with this?

Seriously, how big is too big for most of you folks? What I want to tie can be as big as 3/0 or 4/0, but I think I can scale it down to an 8 or 10 without my stubby fingers holding me back. I want them to be usable.

I think I'm going to do a variation of this:

or this:

Everything's bigger in Texas. Sweetandsour sent me a hook only a little smaller than that one. He claims they use them for 'gators. I have it hanging on the lamp on my tying desk.

I’m looking forward to fly fishing and fly tying in Texas soon. Shad imitations, got it.

JimVH - speaking for myself, tie as big as you want. If I don't use it, I'll definitely display it on my tying desk for myself or in my office. That being said, I generally don't use hooks any bigger than #6 streamer hooks.

But seriously, tie what you want.

Also, BUMP!

We have 4 participants so far...

I’ve had a bit of a setback here . . .
But I’d really like to try to get some flies tied and participate.
I’m thinking I might contribute one of my patterns, a mayfly emerger I named “Lolita.”

I’d love to know how long we have to get it done, too.

Good question. I left it vague on purpose until we had some participants. To be frank, the summer is crazy busy and I'd be happy to set the date out 4 weeks-ish. I don't want to lose steam, but I don't want people unable to participate because they don't have time. Can we all have them to me in 3 weeks, give me a week to turn them around and have them ready to fish by the middle/end of August?

So as not to show up Steve with his own fly, I'll tie an Adams instead. I like the idea of a 3-4 week time frame. I'm OK with longer if it's needed so everyone who wants to participate can.

I'm flexible on the timeframe and will do what I'm told.

Fred . . .

I’m sorry.

I hadn’t noticed that you wanted to tie a Lolita.
I’d love to see your variation.

Go ahead and tie one.

I love to tie midges, so I’ll tie a different one than last time.
