Too Good to be True?

Post by Thoth » Thu Aug 16, 2018 11:03 am

SO apparently a new pellet grill company is offering in essence a free grill, buy the grill now and in 5 years get a rebate for the full price paid for it. Might be a great deal, but part of me is really suspicious.

Personally, I find pellet grills, in general, suspicious.

Lots of $$ and everyone I know that at one time bought a pellet grill got rid of it within a year. I have never messed with one, but even with the promise of returned $$ I think I would pass.

We sell the Traeger pellets and grills at Home Depot. They are not cheap. They are well made. I’ve had some chicken and beef cooked on them and it tasted good.

My daughter and her husband use a Traeger. Some of the best ribs I've ever had.

I don't know about the one in the OP, but I personally wouldn't trade my PBC for a pellet cooker. Charcoal is a lot more economical than pellets and I haven't tasted a difference that would make switch teams.

I know a place. Get on I-70 and go east 580 miles. Take the Brooklyn Ave exit and go one block south. Lock your car if you have to park on the street.

As a technology pellet grills have their uses, know several people who have pellet grills and do good bbq on them. Always suspicious of these something for nothing deals. Even if I was considering it, I spent all my money on stupid things like diapers, formula, daycare...

I saw a news segment this morning on site at the Ace Hardware convention in Chicago. They had pellet cookers featured that were wifi connected and all monitoring and settings were manageable via your smart phone from the couch. All day cooking without checking the pit.

Gosh, half the fun of the BBQ is the sneezing, wheezing, and tearing from jacking with the fire. Now any old sissy can do it.

I supplement with wood chunks as well for better smoke.

First thing in the morning. I read this as "wood chucks." I need coffee.

I have never tried it, but I'm happy to chuck one on the grill and try it.

This is, of course, the gamble. That's why the largest payback is from the longest term. It's a clever idea that I've not seen before, but it looks like this company is using the the buyers money (above what their typical profit would be) to finance the company as they get started. Like issuing bonds but instead of returning real money you get a real product. The longer you let them use your money, the higher the return but the bigger the risk that they go under before you get your refund.

I saw similar grills at Sam's a few weeks ago for about half the price. That sales price difference is will be the working capital the company needs to get going strong.
