That's Odd - unusual places for Christmas dinner

Post by FredS » Mon Dec 24, 2018 11:13 am

A few years ago, my wife's side of the fam took a cruise along the west coast of Mexico. We returned to San Diego on Christmas day then caravaned to Yuma, AZ to see her parents who stayed behind due to ill health. Along the way, we rolled in to the Golden Acorn Casino & Travel Center for Christmas dinner with the truck drivers and geezer gamblers.

I've been stuck travelling more than once over the holidays. I think my finest Christmas dinner ever was in a London boozer. Dubious as all hell, I walked in because, well, everything else was closed. "Hello, Yank. Help yourself."

Potluck spread from the locals. Singing. Carlsberg lager. Home.

One Christmas I had nowhere to go so I went to Santa Fe, New Mexico to watch a local Posada and attend midnight mass in the historic Cathedral.
Christmas morning I was back on the road with supper at a truck stop somewhere on I-40

In an ambulance. Unusual circumstances had us staging away from the station all day. We ate sack meals in the front then took turns napping in the back.

It wasn't the worst holiday meal I ever had.

Santa Fe means Holy Faith. I can’t think of a more fitting place to spend Christmas. Lots of places north of Santa Fe in the mountains to spend an awesome, quiet Christmas.

One Christmas when both my sisters were celebrating with thier in-laws, my dad took my mom and I to a really good Chinese restaurant in Hanford, CA for Christmas dinner. This was quite a few years before A Christmas Story came out.

We've enjoyed Christmas dinner at Japanese hibachi restaurants twice.

Thirty fivish years ago, we'd just moved to SC with daughter #1. We were new in town and had no better place to go. I sat next to a retired guy from Japan. He was in Myrtle Beach, alone for a winter vacation. He had been there five days and had played 36 rounds of golf each day at 10 different courses.

Fast forward to 2018 and Mrs FredS and I are again in a new place with no place else to go so we hit up another Japanese restaurant. We sat with a very young newlywed couple who were obviously splurging on Christmas dinner out. Also at the table was a guy who looks like Bill Goldberg with his new Japanese bride, her two children, and who we reckoned was her grown brother. Goldberg kept leaving the table (I think he's a spy) and his Japanese family just sat there, not eating, when he was away. The young couple bought some sort of punch drink in a glass almost as big as a chamber pot. They said it was not good because it had too much alcohol in it. Our Japanese chef spoke enough english to do his job but not enough for small talk. He and the Japanese guests never spoke to each other in their native language. It was such an odd experience that Mrs FredS and I talked about the rest of the evening.

The Boise Stage Stop. Not that unusual for a trucker. Nice intimate dinner with my wife.
