Re: The Home Brewing thread
Mrs FredS has a gluten free diet so most beer is off her list. Even here in the craft brew capital, gluten free beer is difficult to come by, so I brewed a batch of hard apple cider last month. I enjoy it but it came out too dry for her tastes so I'm researching ways to back sweeten the next batch. Of course the idea is to allow the yeast to convert a little of the added sugar to alcohol and carbonate the bottle, then kill it so it doesn't keep going and make the bottles explode.

Tuttle and I are going to bottle our 5 gallons of Irish Stout this weekend. During that time we are going to start our 5 gallons of Amber Ale. We are working from extraction kits now but we plan on moving to grain when we get a good grasp of the process.

Ironically the only gluten free beer I've encountered...is brewed in Lee's Summit...FredS wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2019 8:56 amMrs FredS has a gluten free diet so most beer is off her list. Re: The Home Brewing thread
I reckon that's the most popular way to begin these days. It's less fiddly and decent results are more assured but you can still say you brewed it and still end up spending less that store bought.
A therapist friend of Mrs FredS's came buy and saw my hooch bubbling away in the corner and told me she'd started brewing her own beer recently. Further conversation revealed that she also grows her own weed. It's Colorado yo.

Would Mead work? is it gluten free? I think we know someone who brews Mead
I work with a gal that drinks Magners Hard Cider because she is gluten free...her husband tried to brew some gluten free beer but it was awful tasting stuff...but then his regular brews are awful tasting stuff.
Good luck in your quest.

As it happens, that guy and I made a trade a couple years ago that resulted in my getting some of his mead. It was stout stuff. She's not a fan.Bloodhound wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2019 12:44 pmWould Mead work? is it gluten free? I think we know someone who brews Mead![]()
But I hope he shares his knowledge here. I'm sure prospective mead makers could learn a thing or two.

I have a gallon jug of pear wine from last fall still sitting in the closet. I kind of forgot about it, and now I'm not sure if it's wine or something else. I need to check it out when I get home.

Big brew day yesterday.
Jester and I bottled our Irish Stout and then brewed up some Amber ale.

I was made an offer I couldn't refuse. I bought a start to finish all-grain brewing system for an unbelievable price.

I told tuttle that after 12 batches it should pay for itself. $33.33 a batch for 12 batches.
I am starting a spreadsheet. Cost of materials and equipment spread among the bottles produced. It shouldn't take long to get below $1 a beer.

I almost have all the stuff in my garage. I still have one or two more loads to pick up from his house.
Now the cleaning process begins. I will try and get some pictures once I get it all organized.

Ok, I cut up Abt a bushel of pears, including peels, core, seeds and all, (no Oxford comma). It's all in pots in the fridge until I get back home. I did this last year, but can't remember now how I extracted the juice. Anyway it's back to square one. Which yeast, etc. Hope it works out better this time.

Re: The Home Brewing thread
I'm simply hoping to get juice from the cores without extracting anything from the seeds, then throw them all out. I'll juice the pear flesh separately. Someone locally said to keep the peels, so I did. Not sure why yet.UncleBob wrote: ↑Mon Aug 05, 2019 10:36 amDo you use the seeds for tannins?sweetandsour wrote: ↑Mon Aug 05, 2019 9:04 amOk, I cut up Abt a bushel of pears, including peels, core, seeds and all, (no Oxford comma).
