Thanksgiving 2019

Post by sweetandsour » Sun Nov 17, 2019 8:54 am

It's not too early to begin planning. According to my wife it's late in fact.

We always buy a smoked turkey from our neighbor who is in Sertoma club, and cooks and sells them as a fundraiser. I'll also put some ducks and jalapenos wrapped with bacon on the grill. And a small ham or brisket for my wife's cousin who doesn't eat anything that had feathers.
Also planning some cornbread dressing and a small oyster-rice dressing. And some baked corn. Can't have Thanksgiving without baked corn.
Plum or blackberry cake for one of the deserts, for old times sake, is in order.
For later when everyone leaves I'll have a sip of something and a smoke, both of which are still undecided.

Or, I may just leave it all to everyone else, and just go flounder fishing.
I'm old but I'm happy. (Most of the time.)

Tim

Sounds like a great feast.

We are traveling to Gunnison for Thanksgiving with my daughter and son in law and oldest grand daughter. The Nephew and his wife and 2 kiddos will be there and it should be a good time.

Thanksgiving is usually the one day a year all the Texas VH's can get together, but we are splintered this year and I fear it won't happen. The meal will likely be a scaled back traditional meal of turkey, dressing, and pumpkin pie.

Or, I might just make chili instead.

Roast turkey with gravy, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, mashed sweet potatoes, dinner rolls, stuffing, pumpkin pie. No drinking at the in laws but I’ll have a Bushmills and an enormous bowl of Condor later that night. Vikings aren’t playing so no chance of Thanksgiving bring ruined. Also the reason we’re having at my wife’s folks and not my parents. Never miss a Vikings game with Dad unless I have some Army commitment.

One of my sisters has lived out of town for many a year, missing many a Thanksgiving, so now that she's moved back to town, we're having it at her house.

I leave the sides to the wimin and I'm not doing a turkey this year so I have no idea what we're bringing, outside of some homebrew cider.

Jester made mention of cracking open some new tin of tobacco on Thanksgiving Day, from which I intend to pilfer...

I know we're eating Thanksgiving dinner at our oldest son's house but other than that, I have no idea. I'm sure my wife will be helping and I'll be staying out of the way. Probably will be outside smoking a pipe if the weather isn't bad.

Aside from basting the bird a couple more times, my dinner responsibilities are satisfied. Time for that first gin and tonic!

A pile of homemade cranberry sauce. You can't get it in the can like this!

We'll be scattered about this year. I'll be at the Ranch for part of it and thus sending Mrs. Gabriel and kids off with her family for most of the day. Due to several family circumstances for them, it's gotten a little complicated. Probably a restaurant for dinner.

If the students cooperate, and there's no ice on the water, I may be fishing before the afternoon is over. ;)

Nice; and wow! There's hardly enough left there for enchiladas, or a sausage-turkey gumbo. Thanks for the pics, looks like you guys had a real feast.

Oh, we have a pile of turkey left haha.
The pups and one of the cats were standing by for their treats while I scraped the carcass clean. Lovely dinner! Thanks be to God!
I'm proud to be a millennial (though a curmudgeonly one) still making a turkey. I hear they're killing the traditional turkey. Must not fit in their freaking instant pots.

So was this like pre-Thanksgiving Thanksgiving?

This was the real one. It was the day closest to Thursday when schedules lined up.
