Thanksgiving Day 2020

Post by sweetandsour » Sat Nov 21, 2020 9:41 am

We're staying home, but will have my wife's dad and her cousin over. Our daughter and family plans to come over and stay safe distance, probably eat outside at tables I plan to set up under the carport. So, 8 of us at the most. Other usual guests are staying home, and our daughter and her family in upstate NY will stay at home.
We've ordered a smoked turkey from our neighbors that cook them every year for the Sertoma fundraiser. I'll make some dirty rice with some wild duck meat, (and maybe some Cold Duck to go along). Some baked corn, mac-n-cheese, rolls, and of course cornbread dressing. Will also have some brisket or ham for my wife's cousin who "doesn't eat anything with feathers". Apple pie for desert.

I'm in the hunt for some Peretti T. Day tobacco to order. This will be the first time I've ordered some, or even tried it afair.

Also have a bottle of Wild Turkey 101 in the pantry. I'll save that for an evening sip.

Prayers for everyone here, and for everyone in this country.

We'll be wrapping up our covid quarantine, just in time for Thanksgiving.

Smoking a turkey in the PBC. That's all of the menu we have planned, so far.

Cigarson texted this morning.... He bagged his first deer today. A young buck, by the look of it. Hunting with his father-in-law.
So we'll have something to talk about.

My wife asked if she should even bother this year.

I told her to shut her damned commie mouth.

I'm working up the menu for the sides. My cousin will be doing the deep fried turkey and the convection oven of the duck.

I’m going to miss not having a huge gathering, but we’re going to make the day as traditional as possible with only three people.

I’m trying to focus on the gratitude more than the suckage.

We don’t know if we will see much of our family. A few have COVID and so that is putting a damper on plans this year.

Regardless, I will do a dry brine turkey and all the trimmings. We have a family history of watching Mystery Science Theater 3000 on Thanksgiving, so that will be on for part of the day.

At the end of the day we will likely fire up some Padron 3000 Maduros on the deck. If no one will join me, I have a small sample of Germains Rich Dark Flake to try.

That and a healthy shot of Balvenie single malt to end the day.

Much to be thankful for!

Not sure. I do know I am not headed over to Cousin Mountain this year.

I have another invite I am considering for a small group where'd make the fourth and final.

It comes down to the sweet potatoes. I am very picky here.

Our beloved governor cancelled Thanksgiving, due to covid. We were going to have all the family over. But now we may only have one or two extra people. Also, we are only having ham instead of ham and turkey. The ham is defrosted already and needs to be eaten soon. First Thanksgiving I have had without turkey. BUMMER!!!

But to be thankful, we are all basically healthy. The house is warm. I have plenty of tobacco. God has provided all our needs and MANY of our wants.

I just declined my one and only invite for the year.

Though I could have reasonably declined due to a COVID concern; a nice polite bow out to the invite to retain face for all. (3rd edit - this is the run on sentence from hades. ok. i think this version works)

That is not my reason for declining the wonderfully warm and sincerely offered invite for the full Turkey Dinner experience in a small group, however.

It more because it's an wonderfully warm and sincerely offered invite for the full Turkey Dinner experience in a small group that just scares the crap out of me.

I have never met two of them. I know the first name of one of those but not the other.

All of us know the one person I know in the group.

Can you imagine?

No?

Well it's like this.

It'd suck.

Thus.

No.

I made a grievous omission in my first post. Pecan pie. No way we can have a Thanksgiving Day meal without pecan pie.

Just talked to Cigarson. He bagged another doe.

And his wife would rather have my famous 5-&-a-Half Cheese Lasagna. Her Grandma #1 is serving turkey already. And probably Granny #2, as well.

(Sweet Li'l Mrs. Cigarson is cute as a button. But she's a picky eater.)

And Chicken Gnocchi Soup, like Olive Garden makes. She likes that.

She's bringing an apple pie, which she got a church bake sale today.

Maybe we'll have PBC turkey for Christmas.

Congrats to Cigarson on his deer. I like to age the venison a little in a game fridge if available, or else quartered and in an ice chest, draining and refreshing the ice daily. Include crushed juniper berries in the marinade, and grill the backstrap a medium rare. Have a sturdy red wine to go along. That'll be a memorable Thanksgiving Day.
