Re: Tamale Apocalypse during the 'rona lockdown
Home made tamales are wonderful, as are the ladies who make them.
And this is tamale season.
But around my town there are no home made tamales to be had.
Only factory tamales,

Re: Tamale Apocalypse during the 'rona lockdown
When I was a child we would go to an annual Tamale Party with our extended family. The ladies in the kitchen making tamale mountains, folks laughing around the tables, kids taking advantage of their parents not watching when they weren't taking turns whacking the piñata, sometimes even a mariachi band. Of course people smoked back then so the room had a heavy haze of smoke.
That was Christmas!
At some point those huge parties sort of just stopped. My guess is that the families just kept getting bigger. But my parents, with not a Mexican bone in their bodies God bless 'em, continued the tradition, at least throughout high school and into my early adulthood. There were no more piñatas or mariachi bands but there was still the laughter and tamales. They started in their house and at some point had to move it to a community center. And then everything came full circle and they had to stop doing it.
But they still make tamales every year.

We bought a bag of factory tamales.

Re: Tamale Apocalypse during the 'rona lockdown
So nobody suggested fixing Hov's mediocrity problem by dumping salsa on him, eh?

While I have never bought them out of the trunk of a car, I've bought and eaten them off a stranger's tailgate several times. If I'm going down with a foodborne illness, that's how I want it to happen.

Our neighbor across the street brought over a dozen yesterday. I thought of Hov while I ate one.

Re: Tamale Apocalypse during the 'rona lockdown
A Freind of ours brought us red pork tamales, green chicken tamales and pineapple tamales last night. We ate them with the grilled New York strip steaks I made because he brought them just before dinner and they were still warm. He plans to stop by with jalapeños tamales later today.
My Mexican American brother-in-law will bring us tamales this evening before or after his family gathering. We often get together with them Christmas Eve, but due to Covid our gatherings are smaller.
I helped make tamales a few years ago with my step mother in law and the women. When the men showed up I grabbed a drink with them. Tamales are a lot of work and I very much appreciate the work the ladies put into them.
