I've only ever caught them offshore. I've always been told they are deep water fish and none of the piers around here go out far enough to get there.

Wait for a real fisherman to answer you, though. My saltwater experience is pretty limited.

I will add, with some authority, that I can't think of a fish I'd rather eat.

We've always caught them offshore, along with Rock Cod and Lingcods.
Very tasty.
I don't recollect seeing any caught off a pier.
Maybe your Red Snappers are different.

We caught them jigging with sardines or minnows, using a cannonball weight.

A lot cheaper to go to the seafood section at your local grocery store.

B-b-but you don't get the ruddy fisherman's tan at the grocery store.

Offshore. I've heard of them being caught at 10-15 mile oil rigs, but typically the blue water and deep seas are more like 30 miles and further out into the Gulf. In Texas waters the limit I think is 2 fish, 15" minimum. Not sure about federal waters, maybe 3 fish. But the total possession limit is 3 ... You can't catch 2 in state waters then go out into federal waters and catch 3 more. But anyway, you either need a big boat with all the trimmings, or else go out on what's referred to as a head boat.

30 miles off shore to catch red snapper? That's pretty far out.

What can a guy catch about 1000 miles inland?

I hooked one of those once on an ultralight spinning setup. What a memory.

- I'm not sure if you can get them off the pier.
- They are yummy.
- The big ones are allegedly not as yummy as the small ones. Cut the dark stripe out of the big ones.
-They have been well protected lately, and since big fish eat smaller fish, this has hurt other fish populations in the Gulf.
- Big ones will be available on June first. Fish early, fish hard.

You will note that something is missing from Tim's. A shark said that fish are food, not friends.

We never rented a boat. We'd book spaces on a 65'-ish party boat and they supplied all the tackle and bait.

A day fishing on the boat...even with the loss of the back half of the fish...still a good day by the looks of it! :chili:
