Linux switchers

Post by coco » Mon Dec 08, 2014 12:48 pm

Several CPSers recently switched to Linux from other operating systems. These questions are for them.

1. Are you happy with Linux? Are you thinking about going back to Windows/Mac?
2. What distribution did you choose?
3. How would you describe your computer ability?
4. What struck you as the strangest thing about Linux compared with Windows/Mac?
5. What was the biggest hurdle as you were setting up Linux and getting used to it?
6. Who should not use Linux and should just stick with Windows/Mac? (Grandmas without tech support? John-Boy?)

As for me, it has been so long since I switched that I don't really remember what my major hurdles were. At the time, I was already using some open-source software (GIMP, Chrome, Libre Office, etc.), so the only thing I had to get used to was the layout of the Ubuntu 10.04 (quite different then than it is today). I didn't have a bit of trouble installing it the first few times, and only minor problems since then on other computers. Overall, my transition was pretty easy, and Ubuntu booted and ran so much faster than Windows that I had no desire to go back.

1. Are you happy with Linux? Are you thinking about going back to Windows/Mac? Yes. I am liking it. The only reason I may return to Windows is if I end up enrolling in a Seminary and Linux ends up being a problem using their online classes, etc.

2. What distribution did you choose? Ubuntu

3. How would you describe your computer ability? Average

4. What struck you as the strangest thing about Linux compared with Windows/Mac? UsinFinding an easy workaround for eSword. I tried a virtual drive, and WINE. I decided to stick with WINE.

6. Who should not use Linux and should just stick with Windows/Mac? (Grandmas without tech support? John-Boy?) Petey

Something else I have found is that some functions of some websites and apps may not work quite as expected.

Using the Facebook and Outlook app I cannot copy and paste from Firefox into them. To do that I have to login the regular website. Also, using the tracking portion of the UPS and USPS websites does not work cleanly. They both ask you to install something, which opens a window to install is using Crossover (even though I deleted it before the trial period ended) and I don't know how to get it to use WINE instead. I ended up just using my phone to check tracking on some packages I have out there mid-shipment.

I am very happy with Linux. The computer on which I installed it has never run better--including when brand new.

2. What distribution did you choose?
I went with Linux Mint 17 "Qiana" Cinnamon.

3. How would you describe your computer ability?
Old.

4. What struck you as the strangest thing about Linux compared with Windows/Mac?
All the cool, free software that is available.

5. What was the biggest hurdle as you were setting up Linux and getting used to it?
The biggest hurdle was deciding that if I screwed up my laptop, it was alright so I should go for it.

6. Who should not use Linux and should just stick with Windows/Mac? (Grandmas without tech support? John-Boy?)
People who need access to a lot of MS programs, although I did just find a way to load and use MS Office 2007. Of course it isn't cool enough for hipsters like Jocose.

I keep reading this thread title as "Linus Sweaters" and thinking it sounds interested... and I keep being disappointed.

Just saw that... I guess it's not such a bad thread after all.

I just tracked my Secret Santa package with both Firefox and Chrome under Ubuntu. Both worked perfectly without asking for anything to be installed, so I'm at a loss to explain what is going on in your situation.

Man, that is probably going to be a pain in the tuckas to fix. It is a firmware issue I bet.

Sorry, but this is a firmware issue so I need the model number of your laptop.

Hmm.. it looks like someone has had this problem already: Click Here. And Here. And Here.

That means it is probably not a quick fix. I will look after work and see if I can help.
