Pipe Cleaner Usage

Post by jstrain » Wed Dec 13, 2006 2:45 pm

Just wondering how others make use of pipe cleaners? I always used them to clean the mouthpiece / draught hole before or after a smoke, but last night, I really concentrated on using them during my smoke.

I had a bowl of Blue Note, and while I never found it to be particularly wet smoking, between tamping and cleaning, I had a very enjoyable smoke. I think it may have even been the first time I smoked to the dregs with no relights.

I suppose my question is this...Was there some sort of mystical alignment of the planets last night that gave me such a pleasant experience? Was it the bottle of Victory Golden Monkey I was drinking? Or was it always as simple and boring as keeping the pipe a bit cleaner and drier while smoking?

I usually use a pipe cleaner one after 1/2 or 2/3s of a bowl.

I always use a pipecleaner while smoking anything. I generally use it at about the halfway point, and then a couple of times after that. Certainly if I get any gurgle at all, or I get a taste of nastly wet goo, I go right in there.

Good tip posted elsewhere by someone else here is to use a wire clipper to nip the dirty end off so you can re-use the same cleaner more than once per bowl. Now that's my kind of thrifty!

How does a pipe cleaner work when smoking a cigar? Never tried it but hey if you say they work on anything, I'll give it a try.

With briar I am always having to swab out the moisture with a pipe cleaner. The Kaywoodie pipes with the metal stinger make it eaiser.

Cobs do not present the same problem. They smoke dry and almost always no dottle.

Have I told yall? I LOVE COBS!!! :D

In that case I usually make a pipe cleaner sculpture while smoking the cigar. You should try it - make it taste great!

I hear some people use them in their bowels (sorry, I couldn't resist)
I like my pipes bent and my razors straight.

While I do use a pipe cleaner for my briar, I joyously keep puffing away when my meerschaums gurgle. Because I know that it is slowly finding it's way into what should become a beautiful patina to be admired by all.

I always keep a pair of wire-clippers near my pipe-cleaners.

That is one of the things I love about my Kirsten.
It can gurgle at me like a gorilla on Listerine and I can keep right on puffing.
Plus I get the pleasure of seeing the puddle of goo that drains out of the valve later. (emits sigh of joy)

GScott does not lie. I have seen him clip pipe cleaners, dip them in vodka, and reuse. You can tell he's a small business owner!

Usually I'll run a dry cleaner down into the pipe 1/2 way through the bowl, flip it around and run it down again about 2/3 through the bowl, and after the pipe is done and cooled for a while I'll run another cleaner down after dipping it in Bacardi 151. Works for me and my pipes taste wonderful!

I use pipe cleaners while smoking my pipe as well... I may use three or four, depending on the particular tbac I'm smoking or pipe. My pipe smoking mentor told me once, "use as many as you need that's what they're there for"' so I do... now clipping the ends? I never thought of that, I may start doing that too.

I usually use both ends of 2.

The wire clipper idea... definitely gonna have to do that.

I would like it to be known that I have taken to using a brand of pipe cleaners known as Zen Pipe Cleaners on account of the fact that they are sold for a dollar a bundle at a head shop up the street from my house.

I am not ashamed.
