Any CPS Beekeepers

Post by Grammordon » Thu Feb 04, 2016 9:20 pm

Just curious if there are any beekeepers here. It's about to start warming up here so I've been digging through gear to get ready

Someday.

I make mead and have always wondered about beekeeping.

This thread makes a lot of Hov's one hit wonders look response-worthy. But I used to keep bees as a kid.

Heck, no! My 14 year old is afraid of them.

I don't share his fear but why engage in a hobby in which being stung is an occupational hazard?

That's just me, though.

I help a friend of mine out sometimes. A lot of work really. The Africanized ones make me nervous, but they are less work provided you don't have them competing with the European hives.

Excellent documentary 'Vanishing of the bees' is on Netflix. Well worth a watch.

I'm thinking about it. There's a company here that puts the beehive on your property and comes to service it. They do everything, and you keep a small portion of the honey as payment for having it on your property. All you've gotta do is allow it the space.

At the moment, I'm doing my bit by not mowing the grass. It's all turned to flower and there's bees about. Also snakes.

I've always been interested in doing this. I love honey, especially raw organic honey. Not the processed crap. I need to do some homework on it though because it's definitely been tugging on me.

My dad kept a hive in our back yard. I helped him "catch" swarms; and once helped him "capture" a wild hive from a bee tree, and bring it home. Needless to say, I also helped harvest honey.

But never had a hive of my own. I'd like to though.

My faith in you is well founded.

(Although the 1980s Alabama version was "...honor rural opportunities..." and "...leadership which a Future Farmer should...")

That's how it started out for me, but changed in about 9th grade. Caused a major rift, too. Are we ashamed to be farmers who come from the countryside? Lot of people left.
