The Ersatz Tamper Thread

Post by Hovannes » Sat Apr 09, 2016 9:47 am

from Google---
er·satz
/ˈerˌzäts,ˈerˌsäts/
adjective
adjective: ersatz

(of a product) made or used as a substitute, typically an inferior one, for something else.
"ersatz coffee"
synonyms: artificial, substitute, imitation, synthetic, fake, false, faux, mock, simulated; More
pseudo, sham, bogus, spurious, counterfeit;
manufactured, man-made;
informalphony, wannabe
"ersatz coffee"
antonyms: genuine
not real or genuine.
"ersatz emotion"

Aside from the tamper on a Czech tool, I don't remember ever using a real, made for tamping tamper while piping.
I've used pieces of fruit wood lopped off while pruning.
I've used spent .30-30 rifle brass.
I've used the bolstered ends of my Schrade Old Timer 31OT pocket knife.
I've used a roofing nail(terribly hard on the trouser pockets however)
I've even used a well calloused thumb.
I thought it would be interesting to post other ersatz tamper ideas here.
I think wooden chess pieces from an incomplete set would make for ideal tampers, especially a well carved Knight, Bishop or Castle.
What say you?

I've also employed a real cork from a wine bottle.

I don't think "ersatz" means what you think it means.

That said, I use just about anything laying around.
I am also of the opinion that the Jesuits should be suppressed.

Why does Hugodrax want to suppress the Jesuits?

There's a material used in fly tying named estaz and the voice in my head always replaces ersatz with estaz whenever I see it written. My headvoice is weird like that.

It's your thread. You can do as you wish. Googles definition of marriage is technically correct, too.

I wasn't trying to be a prick. It just comes naturally, I suppose. I was thinking an ersatz tamper would look like a tamper but not be fit for the job. Whereas my golf tee, bit of stick, thumb or finger, etc., becomes a tamper the minute I use it as such.

I've used everything handy. The most common is a little Avo punch I have on my keys.
I am also of the opinion that the Jesuits should be suppressed.

Not sure of the correct usage of "ersatz", but I picked this up while walking on the beach a few weeks ago. I'm pretty sure it's a fin from a hardhead catfish; but it possibly could be from a small gafftop catfish.

Image

Anyway, it came in handy, and I've been using it for a general purpose pipe tool ever since.

Whenever I see estaz I hear ersatz in my head!

Oh, and as far as ersatz tampers go, my index finger, golf tees or .243 brass.

Tampers are cheap. I buy 5 at a time because I keep losing them. When I can't find those, my go-to's are:
Precision Screwdriver base
Screw head
Sticks
Fingers
Keys
