The Very, Very Last...

Post by JMG » Sun Jan 01, 2017 2:20 pm

Since I was 18 I have smoked a blend from The Country Squire called Madagascar. Sadly, very sadly, the key component that was made for this blend by C&D was discontinued about there years ago. Unknowingly, I bought about 4 oz. of that ingredient online right about the time it was discontinued. Given what it was, I simply thought that it might mix well with other blends, but had no clue it was the major player in Madagascar. During our current furlough I was talking with the owner of the Squire and this tobacco came up and it was revealed to me that what I possessed was what he lacked in order to make the blend. By this time I only had about 2oz of it left, but JD, the owner, graciously offered to blend up what is likely to be the very last offering of Madagascar this world will ever see. I've smoked a few bowls of it so far and with each one the blend becomes both sweeter and more bitter knowing it is coming to an end. I have many, many memories strongly tied to this blend, not the least of which is Mrs. Gwen Reeves, the original proprietor of The Country Squire from back in 1970 who introduced me not only to this blend but to the world of pipe smoking entirely. She was a sweet Christian woman who loved the Lord, loved history, and loved talking about both. The only time she didn't call me by name was the first time I ever walked into the shop and the last, when Alzheimer's disease began to take over her mind. It seems silly that the contents of this jar seem so precious to me, but I am thankful that they do.

It's a sad thing, albeit a part of life it seems, when we lose things dear to us.

We've all been there, sir. But don't be daft--just smoke it. All thing come to an end eventually.

Probably some discontinued C&D blend as there have been a few. I don't know what the big secret is anyway. It's not like we're all going to magically figure out the rest of the recipe and go on a mass marketing campaign.

If it was a blend from C&D that was available 4 years ago...maybe one of us has a supply and could arrange for you to have more and thereby get more of the special blend made up... Just a thought.

That would be super cool. However, after that amount of time this blend wouldn't be the same and not for the better.
