Empty tobacco tins are great for shaving soap. Some soaps are larger than others, so you need to buy larger tobacco tins.

The smaller tin wouldn't hold in all the fabulous.

I was recently told that OGS was Peter Stokkebye's favorite pipe tobacco.

It's some STG related madness maybe. Even the 50g of Petersons Perfect Plug, a tiny brick of tobacco, comes in those ridiculous big tins.

They probably got a "deal" from a packaging supplier and decided to standardize tin sizes. Simple economics at play. Nothing to see here, move along...

They'll probably start using old socks for containers next year.

It's not clear and there probably isn't an obvious answer. It probably doesn't matter much either. It might be that their (STG) manufacturing people are always trying to source common containers across many lines at lowest cost. That might mean that containers change periodically. Check whether they have adopted the same tin size as the 100g ODK tins. I think they were different before. So this might be 'standardizing packaging'. It could be because the older tins are no longer available or more costly. It might also be that there was some incidence of seal loss with the old one. You might remember that they gave up on Erinmore flake in the 100g tins. They continued to have seal problems and even the contents fermenting. As a result they discontinued the 100g for Erinmore flake. Murrays had 4 oz/100g tins of Erinmore Flake almost forever.

There has been a lot of change in the legislated tobacco labeling area. You might remember that 50g plugs were typically packaged & sealed in small mylar packages that were not much larger than the plug itself. These are old legacy tobaccos. The existing packaging was too small to support the Gov legislated tobacco labeling laws. The market for them was small and any investment triggers a biz case to justify new investment (that's what new packaging is) in the manufacturer. By adopting standard packaging that is intended to cope with label change they protect the product availability.

Tobaccos are offered across a wide variety of tobacco control jurisdictions and the manufacturers have tough job trying to keep the packaging adequate to adapt to the change.

Well...I'll be. Doesn't bother me none. I always transfer the tobacco to mason jars. I hate these sort of tins for longer-time storage or cellaring. I do, however, use these tins for all manner of random things. So, bigger tins are just dandy for me.
