Match Safe

Post by JudgeRusty » Fri Oct 27, 2017 5:50 pm

The young man that works behind the counter at Milans Tobacconists has noticed that from time to time, I use wooden matches that I carry in antique match safes. We have talked about them on occasion.

He was excited today because he remembered to bring his match safe to work in case he saw me. He had told me he wanted to show me the one he had. He said he kept it by his door but was always forgetting it. Ultimately, he wanted me to have it because I was the only one he had ever saw make use of a match safe. This was my lucky day (my birthday is still two months away)!

This is the most unusual match safe I have ever seen. I have searched the internet for a bit this evening and can find none like it. I hope you all can help. I can find no markings or identifying numbers or letters on it anywhere. It has spring loaded doors, including a false door with a brass fellow thumbing his nose to let you know you opened the wrong end.

Pretty cool. I've never even heard of a match safe until now.

The man thumbing his nose looks quite a bit like the devil hood ornaments that were popular in the 1930s. The automobile (late year Model T?) on the face of the match safe hints at the hood ornament association, too.

It's a nice match safe.

+1

I have bid on a few match safes but never have I been fortunate to win one (let alone have one just fall into my lap like that). Good for you!

Yes, I prefer strike anywhere kitchen matches. Usually, the safe has a rough spot made for striking.

Ayes, mine do, but I've not been able to make them work. They would work with th old Swan Vestas, but not with the blue tips. I shall try again. They are elegant things.

These are the other two safes that I have had for a long time.
Comparing to other safe pictures online, I estimate these to be from around the turn of the previous century.

These usually stayed on the fireplace mantle back home, but I've used them occasionally with my pipes.

I have found a few dealers online for match safes that offer to help with dating and origins, so now that I have photographs of the three, I should send one of them an email I suppose.
