The Persian Slipper Situation

Post by Hovannes » Fri Dec 22, 2017 12:25 pm

I've long been intrigued by the thought of Sherlock Holmes keeping his tobacco in a Persian slipper nailed to his fireplace mantle. I think it is the whimsical incongruity of pipe tobacco and Persian slipper which fascinates me.

I was wondering if anyone here employs objects which are not commonly thought of as pipe furniture/pipe accessories/smoker's articles as contributing to their pipe smoking passion?

There's been some dispute about that slipper. Many has assumed that it was an actual slipper that Holmes kept tobacco in for some damn reason. Others claim that, in the Victorian era, there were novelty tobacco pouches that looked like Persian slippers for some damn reason. I remember when I was a kid, the little tiniest of version of myself, and, when I first read the Sherlock Holes stories I thought that he wore Persian slippers around the house and kept the toes of his slippers stuffed with tobacco. It was only later that I realized this wasn't the case because such a thing would be beyond stupid.

I once had a brass ash tray that looked like a Persian slipper.

As regards your other question, I don't tend to re-purpose things for other things. I'm annoyingly persnickety. The one exception is the cloth I use for wiping my pipes off. It is actually a microfiber cloth intended for cleaning the lenses of eyeglasses. Printed upon it in a reproduction of a painting of a man smoking a pipe by Paul Cezanne. For that reason alone, I re-purposed the cloth for the cleaning of pipes.

Cannot say that I do, other than the occasional repurposed object used as a tamper.

My pipe gear is very basic...with 2 exceptions. My carry bag is a canvas small mil-spec tool bag and I most times have the light of a Coleman lantern going as I smoke. Only one could be considered re-purposed, but the lantern thing is riding on the verge

Hmmm mason jars and nails I suppose. Not much beyond that I think.

Let’s talk about your flame style. Here, it appears to be just a smidge douchie.

Think plain simple color like dark blue, or grey, or black.

Ok then. We’re done here.

Lol. Well, normally I have a zippo. This pic was getting ready for a field exercise and I stole the lighter from my wife's candle lighting stash.

And we were living in Hawaii at the time :chili:

I worked at a store that sold pens. Pens need refills. We sold them too. We put them in a four drawer cabinet. When the store closed I took the cabinet. The drawers are thin and perfect for pipes.

Somewhere I have a pair of Moroccan slippers my Uncle Al brought back from North Africa during the War. Made from goatskin. I've thought of tacking one to the fireplace mantle but I cannot imagine how it could keep my tobacco fresh. Besides, it's Moroccan, not Persian.
Besides that, I don't think my bride would approve,

Yo Hov

Re/multi-purposing is one of life's finest endeavors. Waste not, want not. In the woods, I use twigs as tampers, smoothing off one end by scraping it on a rock, brick or even sidewalk (cement or concrete). My first pipe bag was a CD case holder, which is a stiff cloth cube 1 foot on each side - scored it at IKEA for 50 cents. I knew they were being discontinued and I should have bought a dozen. In the car, I've used the McDonald paper mache cup holders for pipes.

I saw a similar pouch at the surplus store and thought it would be nice but balked at it. Congrats on your arrangements

I can't think of anything that I repurpose for pipes. I have been told that I'd drink beer from a cowboy boot before though.

I sometimes use rolls of packing tape as pipe stands, but that’s about it.

I wonder if maybe he used the slipper to dry out tobacco that he was preparing to smoke...

I was looking into this topic and found some pictures that claimed to be of the Sherlock Holmes Museum...

Image

On the left side of the mantel is a Persian slipper...I am bummed I was hoping it was the name of a classic pipe/tobacco tool...like the baccyflap. I know that this is just their idea as to what might be in the residence of Sherlock Holmes and that it is not definitive.
