McClelland Officially Going Out of Business...

Post by JMG » Mon Feb 26, 2018 9:05 pm

Announced tonight by multiple sources, main of which my good friend and owner of The Country Squire who has spoken directly with Mike and Mary. They will be shutting the doors of McClelland soon to come. Sad, sad day.

Very sad. Some of my first tobacco was McClelland. Christmas Cheer is one of my favorites. I've got some 10+ year of some of their virginia tobaccos and will take my time working through it.

This still is so unreal. Makers of some of the best Virginia blends ever made going out of business because of a Carolina crop failure? So many options appear to me. Sell the business and trademark. Find similar soil and climate to grow red Virginias.

I'm watching the Country Squire Radio live podcast on Youtube now and they said that they have been selling their stock out. So they aren't really left holding the bag. All their stock is sold. What's out there now is the last of it.

That looks like two options. I’ll never be able to substantiate it, but to me it looks like the gentlemanly option. The writing is on the wall for American tobacco producers. Rather than wither and die, they went out on top.

Thanks for a great run. That’s all I can say.

I've listened to the podcast several times. Jon David is what a tobacco shop owner should be.

He's a top notch Christian friend. Called me the other night to see if I wanted to come to the shop and work into the wee hours packing orders after the IPSD sale. Sadly my wife had her biopsy scheduled early the next morning so couldn't hang out. Though I do cherish our late night hangouts when they happen.
