No Pipe Smokers to be Found

Post by Stanley76 » Tue Feb 05, 2019 6:45 pm

I was thinking about how much I enjoy this forum and watching Youtube pipe tobacco reviewers and it hit me that I like it so much because I do not know anybody in my day to day life that smokes a pipe. Or cigars either for that matter. I do know a couple of guys from church who dip snuff or smoke cigarettes, young guys but I seriously do not have any friends to smoke a pipe with. Vapers are everywhere but they make me nervous because they are strange and from the future. Come to think of it, I don't remember that many pipe smokers from my youth. A couple of Sheriffs did, I knew a dean at a University who did and a Chief of a Campus police department who did, but that's about it. Lucky for me, I sort of view smoking a pipe as a solitary introspective type thing and not a group sport.

I never saw anyone smoke a pipe until after college. I did find my grandpa's pipes when I was in High School (he died when I was eight) in the shed but my grandmother hated them and tossed them out after I found them.

Pipe smokers are very rare around here, but I did have a nice surprise recently. About a year ago I hired a young man to be our safety coordinator. I found out recently he's a pipe smoker. The rest of my staff are all girly girls, and while they are exceptional employees, they really suck at talking about pipes, tobacco, and man grunt stuff. The new guy now has a unique form of job security.

I had a few guys from work who would meet up and smoke a cigar with me, but no pipe smokers and now those cigar guys have moved on to other employment and...

I am thankful for the guys from CPS that are close...although we don't get together nearly enough, we can and do meet up for a smoke and a meal and some fellowship.

I used to smoke my pipe in the company of my dog.
For awhile I used to smoke in the company of my daughter's rabbit.
Sadly, both critters have sloughed off their mortal coils.
I really look forward to smoking at the Chestercon, but for the most part it is a solitary endeavor.

My father and maternal grandfather were pipe smokers. In the 1970s, I served in the Army with quite a few pipe smokers. It is rare to see one now, but the local cigarette stores sell OTC blends, so I know someone in Janesville, Wi smokes them.

I served in the Army with a lot of pipe smokers. I got out in 1977. Since then, I have known a few, but it is difficult to find pipe smokers any more. Judging from the online forums, a lot of people still smoke pipes, but they seem to be spread out.

They're out there, man. You'll learn to see them out of the corner of your eyes. Dude in a car with a billiard. Oddjob at a bluegrass hoot with a cob. Codger with a crustomatic.

They just dont want to talk. And when you find a store with a pipe smoking clientele, you'll find you dont want to chat with most of them, either.

But we're out there. Judging you.

To be clear, Sir.

Are you suggesting we need to adhere to the rules of duck-duck-goose from the time of the late 1960's in the classic / stereo-typical Elementary School rainy day recess activities?

Goose is a seeker?

Pah-SHAW!

It's Duck. <pause and walk on slowly> Duck. <add to the tension here. This is where the money is with duck-duck-goose. How long can one keep butts on the blacktop before yelling, GOOSE! at the same time as taking flight in one's own sneakers?>

Hugo?

Goose?

Bueller?

I rarely smoke while there is a possibility of social interaction--well apart from the family. I smoke in the truck, in the garage, out in the fields, etc. One can't smoke at the library or the store or so on so I usually see other pipe smokers while driving.

There were plenty of pipe smokers in grad school---a lot of camaraderie between the faculty and grad students.
Then the nanny state put an end to it.
Tobacco free but not weed free.

Curiously, my son wants me to bring an extra pipe along to the Chestercon so he can join the fun :pipe3:
