Codger Burley Recommendations?

Post by JMG » Wed May 15, 2019 8:10 am

My mom will be mailing a box for my girls over soon'ish and I was thinking about ordering some codger burleys as I can get more for my money and I've come to like burleys in my latter pipe smoking years. So...Prince Albert, Carter Hall, Sir Walter Raleigh Original, or Granger? Thinking about getting a larger tin of one of them and a small pouch of the others to try as I've not had them before (I've had SWR years and years ago, but it was the aro blend, and I had PA years and years ago and hated it, but my taste have changed dramatically since then).

So, what's your recommendations fellas? I hate ordering tobacco I've not tried to be sent here, but feeling like giving this one a go.

You may consider ordering Lane BLWB. It is excellent, usually cheaper than Prince Albert, and what PA was for decades before the redesign.

I thought this thread would nearly start a war-of-the-curmudgeons. You guys have gotten tame.

I like all of the above but I usually smoke PA when I want a mild, easy pipeful of tobacco because once you light it you can forget about it, very few relights and it burns down to a white ash. Off topic but do you like an occasional bowl of a decent aromatic? If you do I have some Creme Brulee that I ordered after drinking some scotch one night and you are welcome to it. It smokes a lot cooler and lights easier than the drug store aromatics and women like the room note. It burns down to ash pretty well too. If you want it let me know how to get it to you. I have some Bold and Burley and Haunted Bookshop that you can have too.

Of the codger blends I've smoked, my vote goes to Carter Hall. It's a decent smoke on it's own, and you can blend it into just about anything.
I tend to find the doctrinal books often more helpful in devotion than the devotional books.... I believe that many who find that "nothing happens" when they sit down, or kneel down, to a book of devotion, would find that the heart sings unbidden while they are working their way through a rough bit of theology with a pipe in their teeth and a pencil in their hand.

I like SWR but not because it is better tasting than PA, rather for the sentimental reason that it is what my Uncle smoked

I like Prince Albert but the trouble with it and the other over the counter blends is they burn rather quickly. At least that has been my experience. Pipes & Cigars makes a bulk PA "Match" that would pack more easily in the box your mom is sending the girls.

Heres a link to PA Match and there are some reviews you can read.....

LOL... Unlike DL, I don't regularly choose to smoke Carter Hall over the other options available to me.

Also, I've never smoked Prince Albert, so I don't have an opinion there. I do prefer CH over SWR though. I think CH smokes cooler & I get more of of a nut flavor from it. I found SWR to burn a bit on the hot side of things, and the casing seemed to be a bit more on the sweet side of things (comparatively speaking).

:)

You should try PA...I use it as a blending tobacco but it is also good by itself. I smoke SWR when I am camping, hunting, and sometimes after fishing...its just a sentimental journey for me

Be careful or one of those fairy boxes will end up on your door with Carter Hall in it.
