Briar Harvesting and Cutting Video

Post by FredS » Wed Feb 12, 2020 6:29 pm

The producers of Father of the Flame - you do know about that movie, right? - have put their segment about Mimmo the briar cutter on line for free. Pretty interesting stuff. Mimmo and his guys are recognized as the best briar cutters in the world. His best stuff is expensive, but he cuts it in ways that make attractive pipes.

Good stuff. Of all the parts of pipe smoking that I am ignorant this is the one I am of which I am most ignorant.

At first look, it seems dangerous, but without guards one must certainly be more conscious of ones actions. In much the same way that state-sponsored welfare 'encourages' deadbeats to become dependent on the state, modern safety features on everything from toasters to table saws encourage us to be less careful and less responsible. Da Bears coach Ditka says if you want to stop head injuries from helmet to helmet hits in football, take away the face masks. Guy's aren't going to hit with their heads if they know they're going to get a busted nose or fat lip in the deal. 'Safer' helmets encourage reckless abandon.

From my first shop class in seventh grade, I knew I wanted to work in a shop or manufacturing plant. Since then I've sat through and presented hundreds of hours of safety classes so being aware of my proximity to moving, pinching, shocking, and otherwise dangerous equipment is in my DNA. Of course, I write this with 10 intact digits. You've literally got more skin in this game than I do.
