I prefer the taste with wooden matches. When I was just starting out I'd purchased a Guinness branded torch lighter from Hardwick's in Indy (the only thing in that shop I could afford!) and wasn't above using that on my pipes. I have used Zippos both with and without the pipe insert and still use the pipe lighter frequently. I'm not above using a Bic or equivalent when the need arises.

I’ve been using a Xikar pipe lighter that I bought at my local shop last summer. They’re $60. Mine looks like hell since it goes in my pocket and rubs up against my pocket knife & a Glock magazine every day. It’s great. Beats the heck out of the Thunderbird butane Zippo insert I was using previously. I like the idea of an actual Zippo lighter, but I prefer butane over messing around with lighter fluid.

I tend to find the doctrinal books often more helpful in devotion than the devotional books.... I believe that many who find that "nothing happens" when they sit down, or kneel down, to a book of devotion, would find that the heart sings unbidden while they are working their way through a rough bit of theology with a pipe in their teeth and a pencil in their hand.

My main is a matte black Corona Old Boy with most of the black scratched off. I've had it for several years and it hasn't let me down. I spent a stupid amount of money on a Sillems Old Boy and it fell apart within a couple years. I recently purchased a 4th Generation Old Boy knock-off that stopped working. I also have over 300 Zippos from the 1930's to present that I inherited from my father. I don't use a Zippo often mostly because the fluid evaporates too fast between fills.

Newish Kiribi... oldish bronze zippo... as I'm not usually outdoors, but rather in the garage piping, its usually the kiribi or a wooden match...

I bought my first Imco G77 not long after I started smoking a pipe. I now have six. They have two main problems that I have found; 1, the jet gets dirty and quits working; and 2, the fluid tends to evaporate over a couple of weeks. I should mention that maybe half of the ones I have do not have the aforementioned problems. It is my understanding that these were discontinued 2 or 3 years ago, so whenever I see any for sale I pick up another one or two. They run around $12 to $15. I like them so I put up with the deficiencies. I use the 3x to 5x refined butane which is usually from $2.95 to $4.95 per can. I started out using Ronson butane and some other kind i can't remember but those did not work well. I should mention also that the G77 is similar in physical form to a Bic but it has an angled flame for pipe use and the outward appearance is somewhat better looking than a Bic.

I had a G55R that was a dandy lighter until the plastic fittings finally ceased to fit.

I almost always use a standard chrome Zippo pipe lighter. The Zippo fluid imparts no flavor that I can detect. The biggest plus is that it prevents rim char.
I also have a butane Ronson pipe lighter you can get in the wally world tobacco check out line. It works well enough.

I have a Corona Old Boy I used to smoke pipes. My daily driver is a black BIC. I also have a Clipper lighter I bought in Germany, with a drawing of a plate of currywurst on it, just like the bottom left photograph. It’s among my prized possessions.

I have several Zippos pipe lighters and a regular Zippo in “brushed” bronze (I “brushed” a corroded, smooth bronze lighter I found in the field where we walk our dogs). My favorites are a bronze one my wife gave me and a modern reproduction of an old Art Deco Zippo.

I also have two Zippo style cases with butane inserts marked Stanwell that I got for free as Stanwell pipe promotions and two Austrian refillable butane lighters that I got many years ago. I never use them anymore - worthless in the wind.

It’s Zippo pipe lighters for me.
Love ‘em.

(My wife calls me a gearhead.)
What fluid do you use?

I had a Zippo pipe lighter years ago but stopped using it because I felt like I could taste the lighter fluid.

Now I'm thinking of trying this again.
I have a Zippo that my wife gave me with my name engraved on it. I did not like the smell of the fluid, nor the fact that it had to be refilled about every two or three days whether used or not. I bought a "Thunderbird" butane pipe insert for the zippo and have loved it for years. I also haven't seen one in years.

I seem to recall I bought it here:

BIC baby!
I've had most styles of pipe lighters in existence, but I keep coming back to a simple Bic for home and travel use. So reliable and maintenance free
(unlike all the rest). The only exception is if I am smoking outside on a colder and windier day, when I will use the Zippo pipe lighter (and probably will have to refill it first unless I already did so in the previous 3 or 4 days).
