Near or far?

Post by FredS » Sun Aug 07, 2016 12:07 pm

We buried the son of some old friends yesterday. Actually, he's been cremated, but the memorial service was yesterday. Tyler was a 34 year old young man who I've known for 20 years. He was a fine man and a successful editor of television shows in LA. Many of his LA friends came to Kansas City even though they had a service out there earlier in the week. Folks were that attracted to him. Tyler was engaged to an Indian woman who I assume is not Christian. Many of his friends are not Christian and they had many questions for our pastor the night before the service. He gave his contact info to everyone and offered to have any sort of conversation about God and Tyler and themselves at a later time. But in the service, he suggested that we not try to decided if Tyler was in or out of God's favor (and eternal life in heaven). Rather, let's consider if he was near or far from God. Was he walking towards God or away? He suggested that we look at ourselves in the same way. As Christians, we have certainty and hope in Jesus Christ. Even so, we shouldn't act or lead others to see Christ as the golden ticket to get in to the chocolate factory. Rather, we should see Him as an example - did He move further or closer to God each day? None of us knows when our time will come. We may be so far away that it seems there are not enough days to get all the way back in God's box. But we can at least turn around and get started that way. We can be nearer than we were yesterday.

It was a nice introduction to God's Grace to a room not filled entirely with believers.

Sounds like you have a real man of God in your pastor.

Sorry for your loss.
