Mercy! I just bought another pipe!

Another plucky little Peterson 303 Standard System---this one a rusticated (so I can tell them apart!)
Iwan Ries has a pretty good sale going on right now

That's 15% off the already discount price!

You're prepping for your grand entrance at the Rustinian Orders's inaugural, aren't you?

I'm flattered all to hell. But why can't you try another shape?
We've talked about XL02's, 03's, etc. Also you haven't lived until you have a nice dress Ebony finish. Especially one with a sterling silver accent. Oh my. Words are insufficient. That and a cape will restore your mobility instantly. You'll stand taller and lose years and God himself may take note and start asking you for advice. Such is the power of the pipe. Bless you son, smoke in health.

Is this the beginning of Hovannes PAD? Where is Cleon? We need that sermon!

The little 303 fits in with my piping these days---shallow & wide bowl with good thick walls, not too big, not too little & easy to pocket plus I find the apple shape is comfortable. Now I'll be able to trade off and give the smoothy a rest. I'll have to get used to four pipes in the rack! If pipes were camels I'd be the Sheik of Araby.

Plus I'm cheap. 82 bucks for a brand spankin' new Pete ain't bad.
I find that Systems, with their turned stems, shiney nickel silver ferrules and other century shapes delight small children and make them smile, much like a toy .
Its for the children!

You could have gotten the following for just a little more. Children are hypnotized by Ebony and nickel or better yet Ebony and Sterling.

They probably have it with p-lip too but otherwise the same.
Lots more in Ebony too. Everybody needs a dress pipe.

I have an ebony System 302, which is the big brother to the 303. It is quite amazing.

Clearly a man of class & distinction. Have I ever talked to you about our little church?

Mind you other illustrious individuals did like the 303...

When it comes right down to it, seems to me that it's darn near impossible to beat Peterson System pipes for a practical combination of looks and smoking quality. I have but one System pipe out of my small collection of six Petes and two Irish Seconds, and every time I smoke it I marvel at it. Why everyone doesn't have at least one of these, I can't imagine.

I like Petes but I prefer the non-system pipes.

The link you posted was to a 302... I have yet to get the 303 still but want a P-lip 303 quite badly.

That's Erwin Schrodinger, theoretical physicist, Nobel laureate, creator of the wave equation now called Schrodinger's equation and resident pipe smoker of Dublin from 1939 until he retired in the mid 50's. He was a Peterson fan. I think he's holding a 303 in the pic above. It's not quite big enough to be a 302. There are quite a few pics of him smoking Peterson's and because the pipes are so readily identifiable he's one of the few for whom we know the pipe. So we can wonder about the shape instead.

Which shape is he smoking here?

Nice Burgundy! It's actually a bent Rhodesian. That was the very first pipe shape that I purchased new but in a GBD.

So what makes it a Rhodesian as opposed to a bull dog? It was my understanding that Rhodesians typically had round shanks and bull dogs have shanks like this one. Is that not the distinguishing feature between the two shapes? This has been a perpetual source of confusion for me since I took up the pipe.

It's independent of shank configuration. It's the big round bottom on the bowl. Bulldog's are not fat-bottom girls. 8)

Fat Bottomed Girls

This usually gets Cleon out. He's not very sensitive to fat bottoms.

You see now. You have awakened a discussion that the fine folks on this site, including Rusty, have agreed to let lie. Bulldogs have a diamond shank and can be bent or straight. A Rhodesian has a round shank and can be bent or straight. That is all. The squatness of the bowl or the inclination angle of the bowl "cone" cut off are all secondary. Plainly put - Rusty is wrong.

I know. I know. It doesn't happen very often in matters of tobacciana, which is why I think he's just having a hard time. (Cue the Scotch, Rusty!)

We should pray for him.

Seriously, good people disagree over this issue. The best ones, though, will agree that bulldogs are defined by a diamond shank and Rhodesians by a rounded shank. :smoke:
