You need to get yourself a pre-war, patent era Dunhill Root with the old bowling ball stem. And make it a fishtail. You'll see.

I'm a bad photographer. Please forgive me.

Following is a 1939 Dunhill Root Briar 36 F/T:

In low light. Note the aluminum innertube. Quite the invention before pipe cleaners.
Image

With flash! After cleaning.
Image

The real gem about this pipe, for me, was the stem. Particularly the fish tail, button, and slot. (I didn't feel like I needed to sand out the chatter on the bit.) Dunhill stem at the top and left. 2013 CPS POY stem at the bottom and right.

Every time I see a Dunhill go for big $$ I wonder...can it really be that much better than a Comoy and I know it can't be that much better than my custom pipes from makers here...but as I have never had a Dunhill...who knows...

I have several Dunhill pipes. Some smoke better than others for me but the ones that I went, "Wow!" when I saw them tend to smoke better.

I own a few Dunhill's and my experience is that they are good pipes but not any better than a cheaper pipe that's well made like Comoy. There are many poorly made cheaper pipes. In my experience, though, Comoy isn't one of them.

Wow. I just looked at some new Dunhill's. The prices have gone up drastically since I last looked.

I will likely just stick to my Comoys and others and treasure my custom pipes. I am not sucking up here, but I am lucky to own a King, Turner, Teipen and FredS pipes and they smoke the best of all my pipes. I was thinking about it this weekend as I smoked the same blend in several pipes and while all my pipes smoke well...the custom pipes are the best of my pile.

Agreed.

I’m sure I posted a photo of this 1982 vintage Dunhill Apple when it was given to me about a year ago, but thought I might show it again in the context of this discussion.

Image

It’s a wonderful pipe that I seem to grab quite often as I keep it up at work. This little Apple and Presbyterian Mixture seem to be a match made in heaven. But my first pipe loves were old Comoy’s of which I have several, then some good old Orliks. In many respects they are quite similar to this Dunhill.

But for sheer joy in smoking, handling and admiring...
Yes. My FredS. A Slowtoke. A Rad Davis. A Tinsky and a few others handmade by fine pipe artisans.

Looks like imgur might not be the ideal place to post photos! Imagine my disappointment when I went to view the pipe rack, and all the img links are broken. :'(

I'll upload mine to Pinterest from now on, and share them here that way.

I've never had a problem with Imgur. I am posting from there now. One of the first estate pipes I restored, a Pipa Croci True

So far, 100% reliable and easy to use.
Much better than Photobucket that I used before they imploded.
