Anybody know anything about a pipemaker named Schmelzer?

Post by durangopipe » Wed Nov 22, 2017 7:34 pm

I guess the thread title says it all.
Anybody know anything about him or her?

Initials are D.R., or possibly Dr. Schmelzer?

Might be a hobbyist.
I've seen only one pipe and can't find any info.

Thanks.

Okay, okay. . .

I'll admit the name is rife with humorous possibility.
I immediately thought of old time vaudevillians spraying each other with seltzer water.

Guess he will remain an unknown.

No, not necessarily. The juvenile antics of us fools might just keep this alive long enough for Rusty to tell you why you're worthless.

Well, it's certainly "different." There's an ambiguous word.
I've never seen a piece of plateau oriented like this.

And it seems shaped and finished too well to be the only pipe he/she made.
I'd love to see more. If there are any.

Or, maybe the pipemaker agreed with you and took one look and called it quits.

Anyone like it (besides me)?

The idea isn't exactly new.
Lots of pipemakers have played with the idea:

Seltzer Schmelzer uses plateau the way some others use partial rustication, or different stains.

It's not a Comoy's or an Orlik, that's for sure. And I love traditional pipes.
But It is interesting.

I think.

I just wonder who the heck he/she is.

He's referenced on this page if you scroll down to "DRS," but it doesn't give a lot of info. He's also listed as one of the makers on this page, but they don't currently seem to have any of his pipes or any additional information.

All that to say, it looks like he might be a real pipe maker, but maybe hasn't hit the bigs yet.
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are not.

Thanks Sir Moose!

I was looking for Schmelzer, never thought to look for DRS.
Good to see another pipe.

I knew about the pipe that had previously been listed at Blue Room Briars, it's the one pictured in the post above.

Just got an email from Scott at Blue Room Briars who says they've had two, and they're the only two they've seen. Apparently an American maker who only made Danish style freehands.

You know what Chuckles the clown used to say:
"A little song, a little dance, a little Schmelzer in the pants."

I've given it a home. (Film at 11:00)
Can't wait to pull it out at school and see my pipe-smoking colleague's reaction.

Wait, that didn't sound good.

Here's another Schmelzer, the one that passed through Blue Room Briars previously.
Scott sent me the photo.

This looks to be a left-hander's pipe.

I haven't smoked it yet, but I'll report on it when I do.
It has a rather large bowl so I'll likely wait until next weekend to give it an inaugural smoke.
