The Savinelli 320 family you posted pictures of come in a wide range of sizes, all with the same “look,” even though the proportions change a little going from the smaller 321 …
I didn't even know they started making a 321. Cool beans.

OTOH Savinelli's Tre series sounds mighty tempting.

I believe tadpole and pregnant guppy are the preferred terms for the 320.

I've a 320 in the Capri finish. It is an excellent smoker, as are all my Savinellis. I never noticed a problem with the weight, but I've never done anything but sit and read while smoking it, either. But that is true of most of my pipes. Very few have been smoked while driving or working.
Please be patient. I'm offending people as fast as I can.

Came back after suggesting this thread to StoicDetective and saw your post again, JudgeRusty.
All off my authors are sitters, so if I'm working anywhere near a desk or bench when I'm smoking one I just set it down.

It's fat, heavy, and doesn't clench well. My Savenelli Venezia smokes like a champ. I haven't smoked my '17 POY, yet.
Even with a softy bit? The shape looks like it'd be a good truck driving pipe.
They're pretty heavy.

IMO, a much better Savinelli clencher with almost exactly the same chamber configuration is the bent, oval-shank, squat dublin (316 KS).

Image
Didn’t we do a POY with a similar shape? It wasn’t a Sav. Luciano? Something like that? Starts with an L for sure. If you nabbed one of these pipe shaped POY’s (given I’m not simply recalling an hallucination) what say you?

Personally, I don’t appreciate the shape as other may.

Just came across this author by Jean du Toit in South Africa (pipe maker's phpotos):

He doesn't seem to make a lot of pipes, but the ones he does are lovely.

He also occasionally sells some estates, usually taken from his personal collection. I bought an estate Teipen from him last year that was like new.

It really doesn't get much better than that Sasieni. Of course, it's old school Sasieni so it's to be expected. Classic. That's the benchmark for an author right there.

Currently smoking Carter Hall in it as I type.

Handsome pipes all. Consider as well the Butz Choquin 1025 and the Briarworks Bullmoose which are in the GBD 9438 style.
Some older unsmoked 1025 pipes can be found occasionally on Ebay. I think the stems were better on those older Butz Choquins. A little age on the briar doesn't either.

With these shapes I find that it's important to carefully check the draft hole placement. They can often be drilled slightly high and if the drilling of the tobacco chamber is too "U" like and doesn't gently taper to the bottom you may wind up leaving some unwanted dottle. Not the easiest shape to get just right from a smoking quality perspective, in my view.

Here’s another shot of a Comoy’s 256 (top) and a Wilke author from the G.L. Pease collection:

I like the Wilke a lot.
Well, I like them both, as different as they are.
