Pocket Pipes? anyone have them smoke them?

Post by Bloodhound » Fri Jan 26, 2018 1:35 pm

I don't remember seeing this here before. Do any of you smoke something like this? I think this and a small "BaccyFlap" would be cool.

I always looked at these in the same line as Church Wardens, pipes but not much smoked.

I have one like that, but haven't smoked it. In fact, I forgot about it until now. Maybe this weekend?

Everything is available on the bay. I saw a guy with a leather baccyflap that folded down on itself like the old leather coin holders that my Grandpa had...it looked perfect to match one of these pipes

The baccyflaps that I've seen are hard. The old ones are made out of bakelite, if I recall correctlty.

I think they go for about 40 pounds on eBay; I have been trying to catch an auction for one.

I think those pipes are most commonly called vest pipes. If you google "pocket pipes' you get a lot of weed pipes.

Regarding baccyflaps - I'd like one! I think one of our wood turners should learn to make them. Back when I was a redneck, I had a fancy silver can that I could put my cardboard Copenhagen cans in. Once I got serious about chewing (>2 cans a day) I gave it up because it was a PITA getting the empty can out. Besides, it heavy. Like walking around with a brick in your pocket. It would be cool as a baccy flap, but you'd still need a cardboard snuff can in it because the silver lid doesn't attach to the silver can itself.

I have a century old opera (oval) shape that fits nicely and lays flat in a coat pocket. Bought it from Kaydens some time back. A bit ghosted but a steady diet of Lakeland is curing that over time.

I had Randy Ubben make me a retro civil war pipe. Small egg, fits nicely in a military vest pocket, handy for a quick smoke while on a rest on a march.

The opera pipe? Does it look like a small apple thats had the bowl sqeezed at the sides? I would't mind having one of those in a dress finish.
