Theological Pipes

I'm an amateur maker of pipes (among other things), and I get around to making a pipe every month or so. A few months ago, I was talking Calvinist theology with some friends and realized that the tulip pipe is ideal for a Calvinist. So I made one:

Image

I called it "The Calvinist," and a Calvinist-leaning acquaintance immediately bought it from me. He must have been predestined to own it.

So I decided to try giving the next pipe I made a theological name. The result was this guy:

Image

I called it "Total Depravity." Again, a theologically-minded acquaintance scooped it up. He ended up giving it to his girlfriend when he proposed to her! Not sure what that says about the relationship, but I'm proud that my pipe was involved.

Not long after that, I got a commission request for something really pointy-looking. Eventually I came up with this one:

Image

The chamber on this thing is huge, 7/8" wide by 1 5/8" deep. I felt that my only choice was to call it "The Reprobate." The customer was very pleased.

Now, lest you think that Calvinism has all the good pipe names, here's one from the other end of the spectrum:

It's a freehand, so I called it "The Pelagian." It follows the innate goodness of its grain. Or something like that.

They are all great! The fourth pipe is on point, not on theology, but on style!

Send me PM when you get to "Good," "True," and "Beautiful."
(I assume that Calvin believed in such things.)

And keep working on pipes, by all means. You have the gift!

I like the look of the grains in the Pelagian.

Looks like it would pair well with a braggot.

I think the tulip you made is quite nice, really. Keep working on it and refining it. I think it could become a signature shape for you.

Thanks for the kinds words, guys. I do want to keep working on that tulip shape. It's fun to make. I'm not sure yet whether I'll stick with the diamond shank for it or go to a more traditional round shank.

Del, I do hope that someday my pipes get to the Good, the True, and the Beautiful, but I'm afraid my skill set is a long way off from that yet!

Personally, I think it might look better with a round shank and a thin fishtail stem. I'd also keep the overall pipe small with delicate proportions. That's just me though.
