What pipe brand/house/carver catches your eye

Post by Bloodhound » Mon Mar 12, 2018 3:23 pm

When I started this hobby I bought a basket pipe, bent billiard and that was all I needed for a little while. Then I needed/wanted more pipes and have basically just purchased pipes that I liked the look of and were priced right, a few new, most estate. But as the hobby has progressed, I find that I have a couple of stampings that will catch my eye almost as much as the "look" of the pipe.

One day early on, I was in a pipe shop and the owner asked what I was smoking I showed him the pipe and he told me he thought it was a Comoy 2nd or 3rd quality and he pronounced it a good quality pipe...So from that point forward, Comoy will always get my attention.

I was in Chicago 2 years ago at Iwan Reis and ended up buying one of there stamped pipes...since then 5 other IR pipes have joined the pile.

I thought I would look for Petersons, Stanwells and BBB at different times, but that is not the way it has worked...If the pipe is something I like the look of, the stamping is a consideration.

But I have purchased pipes that I didn't really like the look of because of the stamp and then grew to like the pipe afterwords.

What stampings/names light you up?

Grabow--Commodore only.

Mostly, though, it is by the pipe and shape more than manufacturer for me.

Ditto to what UB said about "by the pipe and shape."

But I do like what James Upshall does with their making the utmost of block grain.

Old Ashton, Becker, S. Bang, old Dunhill, Ferndown, Askwith. Any old made in England brand like Barling, Loewe, Astley's . Anything except Charatan. I could probably get into Upshall but I had a bad experience once. I like small pipes in more traditional shapes.

Right now Scottie what's-her-name from the Kansas City.

I have just gotten to the point where I realize I prefer English style pipes over Danish, Italian and French. That said, I really like the lip on my Northern Briars so I do search for them more than others.

Almost all of them, apparently.

The ones I crave are the traditional shape manufacturers like Dunhill, Ashton, etc., and those artisans who are respectful to the classics.

Yes! Straight billiards with a spigot. I missed out on one on eBay that I still dream about (until the next one comes across my cross hairs).

Ferndowns tend to run on the large side. If yer into that, fine. Just double check the stats before you buy.

I have a little apple like that, we'll over 100 years old, that has also been a brute to break in.

Comfession: I still love it. It's like that girlfriend in college that was just so pretty but just not much fun to play with. I just kept trying, you know? Seemed like it should have been fun.
