CPF Meerschaum Lost to Time

Post by FoodMaven » Thu Apr 19, 2018 2:08 pm

Sometime in 2013, I mailed my Consolidated Pipe Factory meerschaum to Tim West/J.H. Lowe repairs in Ohio. In the months and years following I would sometimes email, sometimes call Mr. West and was given a variety of excuses about my century old pipe.

1. The basement flooded.
2. The mother-in-law moved in.
3. The wife was gravely ill.
4. The pipe is on the steps leading to the basement workshop.
5. The pipe is on the workbench.

I have never, other than by calling and forcing a conversation, ever had a response. I know that Mr. West has either lost my pipe or the document sent in the box to him as the owner's identification. It would have been more honorable of him to so inform me. As I paid $25 for it, I'm certain he could have reimbursed that amount.

I don't care to say this is an FYI or any sort of warning about Mr. West's business. I post this here as a tribute to the pipe's original owner, a Californian who actually drove a stage around the Sacramento area.

The pipe had gold filled filigree lace over the top of the bowl. It had it's original amber stem. The stem's bonescrew was in need of repair and that is why it was sent to Ohio. I only was able to smoke it one time.

Sic Transit Gloria Mundi. At least for me and that pipe.

That is a bummer. Screw ups are bound to happen within any business. I would think this would be especially so for online service business. So much can go wrong between the time you send your item and the time it gets back.

I always get a little apprehensive when I send stuff off to get fixed.

Man that's too bad. I currently have 3 or 4 good pipes in need of repairs that are still sitting here in the cabinet.
I'm old but I'm happy. (Most of the time.)
