P-lip or Fishtail?

Post by arank87 » Tue May 22, 2018 7:47 pm

One of my goals as a new pipe smoker is to try a ton of blends and also to try some of the classic pipes. One of the pipes I really want is a Peterson System Standard but I think I want the fishtail, not the p-lip. I love a good, open draw and I've heard the p-lip is pretty constricted. What do you all think? Any P-lip fans out there?

I have read that the P-lip was made for folk with sensitive tongues. As I view that I see it's just a sales gimmick.

I fine and noble quest you beset.

If you are seeking a system pipe, please go with the intended p-lip on the first one. See what it's like when it's working as intended. Then, go from there.

Other Pete's, I prefer the tail of the fishes. However, I do not abhor the p-lip as may hap others might express.

If you like smaller bowled tankards, Pete is a fine way to fly.

I have a couple non-Peterson P-lip pipes. They're alright. Picked them up at local shops and sales for $10-15 so I don't have a lot invested. I'll probably not buy any more just 'cause I find them difficult to clean. It's a good thing I rarely clean my pipes.

pah-shaw. Fake news.

The p-lip was designed to avoid tongue bite, which is exactly what it does on a biological and physics level.

I've often said the google machine has killed experimentation. Your question is perfectly fine as you explore this hobby '87, but the best learning is first hand. We used to have a Canuck friend here who forgot more about pipes than the rest of us will ever know and he gained most of his knowledge on the subject well before the internet was even a twinkle in Mr Gore's eye. He was able to share his knowledge with us via the net, but he gained it the old fashioned way.

I miss Rusty.

I have one p lip pipe and dislike it greatly. But I keep it for purely sentimental reasons.

To be honest.... one's ability to enjoy a p-lip bit depends an awful lot on the way the teeth are aligned. It is comfortable for some, and detested by others.

I can clench my p-lips comfortably. Your mileage may vary.

I agree about doing more experimentation and less asking but do you think a system pipe cost 125 bucks in 1990 or 1900? I feel like the cost of admission makes people more wary. I’ll buy just about any tobacco and smoke it without asking because it’s 10 dollars but with pipes I’m more careful. I feel I really need the pipe to work because I can’t really afford a misstep tha expensivie.

I have p-lips on my Systems, fishtails on the rest. P-lips just feel right on Systems---no more of a sales gimmick than the System's well or military bit.
I wish I'd had a p-lip back in college when Sail Green and other "bitey" Danish aromatics roamed the world.
A System pipe without a p-lip is like ordering a mushroom burger and hold the mushrooms.
I want the whole System experience.
P-lips on conventional Petersons look, to me, out of place.

But do what you wish.

I was at a local cigar shop today that carries a couple of the 4th gen tins, Lane IQ and a handful of Petersons. They just got in a 999 with the silver army mount. It sure was a pretty pipe and felt great in hand. Then I noticed it had a p-lip. Kind of killed it for me as it looked like it would be difficult to clench.

Now what about the Savinelli dry? I seem to remember reading an old article that basically said the drilling was better in those and this produced a cooler smoke.

I'm firmly in the "don't like P-lip" camp. The bite zone is uber thick and uncomfortable, IMHO. Early on, I bought a Peterson System 303 with a P-lip. Once I learned how to make a decent stem, I replaced the P-lip stem with a fishtail. Once I learned how to make a decent pipe, I sold all my Petersons. YMMV.

But ya gotta insert the little balsa wood filter for the full effect.

P-lips were created to frustrate and discourage pipe smokers.

This is off topic but the message on the p-lip is mixed at best so should I take my money and wait until the GKCPS? Do you think I’ll find some good deals there?
