What tha fuzz?

Post by CupOjoe » Mon Jul 30, 2018 7:46 pm

So I ventured into the world of antique store pipes. I figure I should start with something in decent shape that isn’t really worth anything in case I screw into up.

So I picked up this bent rusticated Briarlee. It was in decent shape and didn’t have a ton of cake like many you see.

So I did what I would consider a basic cleaning on it, deoxidized the stem, went through about 100 pipe cleaners and lightly reamed the bowl (planning to leave a little carbon).

However, there be a ghost in this here pipe.

So I busted out the ol’ salt treatment. Kosher salt and some white rum. Ended up going three rounds with it, the longest being about 36 hours.

I got it to a place that I feel like I can live with. Layed it aside to dry and picked it up 2 days later only to find that a white fuzz is growing around the lower half of the bowl.

Any thoughts?

I’ll try to upload a pic or two.

Rum not your best choice, Everclear is better and the salt seemed to be easier to get out...maybe its because there is less sugar.

Rum works great for the final wipe out before smoking and for regular cleaning, but Everclear for the cleanup/restore of an estate pipe.

Didn’t have any on hand. I think I have a bottle of Ethanol rubbing alcohol, I had heard it works as long as it’s not isopropyl alcohol.

If it's salt, then a wipe will make it disappear. Some crystals might reappear (somewhat depleted) as it dries. It might take a few wipes to clear it all out.

Smoking a salty pipe won't hurt anything. It will get incorporated into the cake.

If it's not salt, a wet wipe won't hurt anything.

I tried rubbing alcohol on one pipe, but went back Everclear...I know its food safe and I was more comfortable with that.

Also... Rubbing Alcohol has a lot more water. 70% isopropyl alcohol (toxic) v. 95% ethyl alcohol.
