Upshall grade P size 6 or larger (big pipe). The darker one in the picture is my older size 5 which is what we would compare to a group 5 size.

My pad has little boundaries when it comes to Upshall pipes.

Very very nice Upshalls, JR. They say a trained eye can spot an Upshall pipe from afar, and I believe it. But not this one, below, though. Kind of a plain Jane. Found this small Upshall Billiard today for only $46. Looks like someone put some kind of coating on it.

Yeah, that is the wrong color finish for a P grade. See the two P grades in my photo (one heavily used and one not). Study up on your Upshall finishes on their web page. Even though no production, web page still up with size, and most of the grades and finish information. It helps when shopping for estates.

I snagged another vintage Ropp a while back, a nice Stout Pot, great smoker.

How many do you have?

I own exactly one Ropp and it came from you. I'm not exactly sure how, prolly a box pass.

I have 3 as of now. They're all "Vintage Stout" a Zulu, Billiard sitter and a Pot.
I put a vintage stout bulldog in a box pass a couple of years ago, I hope it smokes well for you.

Pipe and Tobacco mail day!
I haven't been able to smoke the falcon pipe yet and holy crap the pipe is light weight!
It is like a high class cob. (Yeah, I'm glad I didn't buy a cob) Obviously, the bit needs some TLC.

Yes there's a whole lotta bird in that photo.Image

But that coating/ finish on there is easily enough removed. And then I'll endeavor to restore the correct color. Thanks for posting.

Charatan's Make Freehand with some dense vertical graining (or would this be considered flame grain?). Based on the stampings, Upshall's Barry Jones worked for Charatan during this time period and introduced Freehands like this, so it well could have been made by him....

...or not.

But I assume you are keeping the pipe to smoke for your own enjoyment, so it is fine to think that.

No numbers or symbols. Other side of pipe reads in cursive, in three lines indicating it is from the 2nd Lane Era:

"Made by hand
in
City of London"

On the bottom of shank "Extra Long"

I took a gamble and bought a new Road Town bamboo off ebay. I got it for twenty bucks, unsmoked, so it wasn't a giant risk. It came in this week and boom, I'm pretty impressed. The fit and finish is impressive and over all it appears very well done. I'll light it up this weekend and start putting it through the paces.
