Do You Wear or Carry a Watch?

A child snuggled in your lap hugging your wrist to their ear as to listen to the tick tick of a watch.

That's one of your simple pleasures right there.

My mechanical Aerojet has 30 jewels and a very very quiet tick sound. My two Timex dress watches are loud enough hear without putting it to your ear. My grand daughters all like my watch addiction. My daughter bought me a watch case last Christmas with 14 slots for watches. I had it filled, but as I said I sold a couple so I am down to get a new watch or two or three...

For the longest, I had trouble finding a watch to fit. So I switched to a pocket watch for a few years.
Then I began to snoop around some jewelers with nicer watches that could obtain individual links for bands of watches they sold.
Long story short, Hudson was born 12/23/92 and Beth gave me a Citizen Promaster for my birthday on 12/25/92.
The chronograph and countdown timer don't work any more, but I have worn that watch most every day since.
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal

I've tried on a few occasions to wear a watch, but just couldn't stand something on my wrist. Also tried a pocket watch and often left it due to forgetfulness in putting it back in my pocket. None of this is surprising in light of everything else I do that's similar. I take my ring off every night when I sleep. I empty my pockets when I get to work, when I get home, even when I go to a friend's house. I just don't like "stuff" being attached to me.

I stopped wearing a watch when I started backpacking in my early twenties. Back then, time ruled my life. These days, it's smart phones. I resisted the smart phone disease for years and carried a flip phone when no one carried a flip phone but eventually succumbed. Perhaps it's time for another purge.

I carry a silver half hunter on a silver chain. It has two silver fobs. One, a miniature sword, the other a diminutive chess knight. I carry my either in the front pocket of my jacket or, if I am wearing a waistcoat, in the watch pocket of that.

I remember hogleg. He posts on other forums as well.

I've got a Seiko 5. Bought it with the cloth band, but replaced that with leather. It's my everyday watch. I was wearing a Timex Expedition as my everyday/bang around, but I ended up giving it away.

Hmm... Lubbock may be a contributing factor to a lack of smart watches 'round these parts.

Could be. I admit to being curious. I like techy gadgets and there's some real Dick Tracy stuff going on here. When I can FaceTime on a watch, I suspect I will.

Mrs FredS and Daughter #3 wear apple watches. They do awesome things like counting daily steps ('cause evidently, just knowing how many steps you take each day burns calories), and vibrate when you get a text or email ('cause evidently, just knowing you've received a message is as important as knowing what the message is and responding). They also tell time, but evidently, don't help you with actually managing time or even being on time.

Re: Do You Wear or Carry a Watch?

I have lost my mind and ordered a mechanical watch.

My old, cheap Lorus dress watch needed a battery and it wasn't worth the expense - the watch probably cost $29.95 new 30 or 40 years ago and the goldfish colored plating is worn off in a lot of places. My everyday wear Timex Expedition is pretty badly beaten up.

I decided to get a halfway decent dress watch. I have a few formal events coming up and I don't want to embarrass my wife.

So, being the cautious, research oriented person I am (especially before any significant purchase) I started to read watch forums and watch reviews. Big mistake. Apparently the watch world is considered a hobby, too, just like pipe smoking. Horology. If someone had used the word in a sentence before this week I'd have thought they were talking about studying hookers.

I've discovered that if you replace the watch info. in any post on a "horology" forum with pipe or tobacco info, the posts become identical to posts in pipe and tobacco forums, and all the same characters are there. Ordinary guys. Snobs. Experts. Newbies. Critical people. Supportive people.

I have determined that the words "hobby," and "collecting" are euphemisms for madness. Guilty. But screw it. We only live once, right? Might as well enjoy it.

Oh the words and phrases I've learned!

Seiko, Citizen and Orient - the big three as far as affordable (less than a couple grand) watches go. "Fashion watches" (Gucci, Armani, etc.) a no-no.

In-house movements. Automatic mechanicals, that wind, hack or don't. Solar. Eco-Drive. Swiss vs. Japanese vs. Chinese. Quartz is apparently a no-no for the hobbyists, even though they typically keep the best time.

Believe it or not, the Chinese Seagull watches and movements are highly respected. Who knew?!? Inexpensive Seiko 5 mechanicals are revered as well. And who knew that "caliber" isn't the diameter of a bullet or rifle bore but the name of a watch movement? Saphire crystals, the good stuff.

And on, and on.

After many hours of "research" I've found a pipe dress watch I can afford. One I like the looks of. And one I can wear with a tie and in the presence of an horologist and not be frowned upon: a Citizen Bambino Version 4, with an in-house, windable, hackable automatic movement, domed crystal and an honest leather band. It cost about three times as much as my last most expensive watch - a sub $50 Timex Expedition. But watch buffs consider it a barely acceptable if respectable "entry level" watch. I got it in rose gold and brown face. (Hope that's politically correct.)

And now, I'm waiting for it to arrive with all the excitement and anticipation I've felt while waiting for a Mark Tinsky, a Rad Davis or a Wayne Teipen to arrive.

Pray for me. I do not need another "hobby." I'm crazy enough already.
