Pancakes are friendlier than waffles

Post by Irish-Dane » Sat Apr 07, 2018 8:22 am

Last weekend the Missus and I took a mini vacation over the ridge to Gatlinburg. If you've ever been, you know the plethora of Pancake houses that dot the landscape. If you've never been, read the previous sentence for context. I'm a huge fan of pancakes, largely huge because of the pancakes, if you must know. I mentioned my desire to visit at least one or two of said Pancake houses many times in the weeks leading up to the vacation, only to be rebuffed by her simple comment, "Waffles are better than pancakes." What a heretic, that one. But I digress.

Friday morning we settled on the Smoky Mountain Pancake House, a rather large faux log cabin exterior breakfast diner at the last light in Pigeon Forge before heading into the winding gorge that leads to Gatlinburg. It was about as greasy-spoon as you can get in a tourist town, and we got there early enough to be sitting beside all the "locals" on their way to work and such. By the time we finished our breakfast, the tourists had started to arrive and complain about the weak coffee and wobbly chairs, our cue to pay the check and leave. Again, I digress.

I ordered the large breakfast and a stack of buttermilk pancakes to go with it. Hush, you; that's a completely normal breakfast order for a fat Irishman. The Missus ordered the, "waffle breakfast". As I watched her eat the grotesque perversion of gluten batter, it got me thinking about all the waffle freaks out there and their terribly discriminate behaviors. What do I mean, you may ask? Well, you'll always find waffles at a Pancake house, but you rarely find pancakes at a waffle house. Discrimination, or at the very least, a grossly negligent double-standard. Bastages.
It's not available because if you try it you will die. Your face will melt off and your children will weep over your exploded body. --Colton

Respectfully, I see pancakes, waffles, and crepes as sort of like the Trinity.

Burn him! Everyone knows that crepes are merely civilized tortillas and the waffle but a Pizzelle affected by generational sin.

I have no idea what you are talking about, of course a side of buttermilk pancakes with your breakfast is a normal meal for a man.

I stand with ID. Long live the pancake.

And, I have actually eaten at a Smoky Mountain Pancake House in PF more than once. It would be hard to tell if it was the same pancake house ID dined at as there are about 612 of them up and down the strip.

I've never been to PF. But I'll take a pancake over a waffle any day, even if my wife does say that I have a waffle brain.

I do not see this as a one or the other proposition. Both are great and I am equally a fan of both. Crepes have no place in this discussion of real food.

My fiancé is from England, and she’s always saying American pancakes are a travesty, nonetheless I enjoy my pancakes.

Buckwheat pancakes at Log Cabin Pancake House on Airport Road in Gatlinburg, the pancake pinnacle. Country ham breakfast ordered as well for the full fat-guy experience.

I don’t eat these delish breakfast treats anymore. But when I did, pancakes were over represented as my brother took to perfecting his flapjack making skills. He did make a dern fine stack of buttermilk pancakes. When we’d go out for breakfast I looked to waffles. No place could top bros pancakes. I had no ref for waffles. This is when I discovered biscuits and gravy. I tasted my first crepe as a young adult. Great dessert.

Yesterday at Costco, they had a sample stand with Kodiak whole grain flapjacks. Like Bisquick to prepare (just add water and fry). I bought a box of the mix, and a jug of maple syrup. Terry cooked some up for breakfast this morning, and he agreed, they were the best pancakes we've ever had.

Ever had real sour dough pancakes made from a starter?
Amazing, but rarely encountered within the pancake community.

IMHO, frozen toaster/microwave pancakes and waffles are of the devil.

A stack of buttermilks with sunnyside up eggs on top with the whole thing covered in real maple syrup is a breakfast I dearly miss.
Also banana nut pancakes with coconut syrup(it's a Hawaiian thing,) but alas those days are over for me.

I'm getting depressed.

Waffles require specialized equipment to make and thus are subject to hipsterism. It is the same problem as beard oil, fountain pens, and... wait. Waffles should reign supreme on CPS!
