Pipe Rack Question...

Post by JMG » Wed Jul 18, 2018 2:19 pm

I am currently building a larger pipe rack with the wood from the original Country Squire. It is 48 years old and smells strongly of the old shop and to tobaccos that used to sit on it. Do you guys think I should seal this pipe rack with some sort of polyurethane or leave it unfinished and raw and unprotected? Both have their perks.

Sealed wood stays cleaner and is easier to clean/ dust.

I like the idea of unfinished.

Also, you might want to consider using a fostner bit on the horizontal board. Then the pipe would have an indent to sit in.

I do like a coat of boiled linseed oil on wood, but I think the aroma that this wood has earned should be allowed to shine through.

Nice router but there's no option in the poll related to the router. :P

Fine. Having not seen the pipe rack in question, I like the idea of the smell of the old shop so I'm leaning unfinished and voted as such.

A while back a guy from church posted on FB he was looking for a router. I had an old Black & Decker that I was willing to let him use... got all excited about being able to help a guy out. He wasn't looking for that kind of router.

Wish I would have made the trip to the old shop, but plan to make one to the new one next year. Just ordered 8 ounces of White Rose and listen to their podcast every week.
