Abandon all hope...

Post by JMG » Fri Feb 17, 2017 12:18 am

Ye who are close to losing your mind.

This is what happens to a pretty decent block of briar when you are a hair's breath away from a break down, trying to pack up to move to another country, and have no business trying to make another pipe...

I'm sure there's some weirdo in the world that this pipe would appeal to. However, this had potential to be a pretty nice. I should have put it away and finished it down the road next furlough some time. Stem is crap, I kept nicking the bamboo (badly) with my files and then finally just said screw it and didn't finishing the sanding and stained the dumb thing green.

WTFredS is wrong with you!!!

The shape of that stummel and the stem work looks beautiful. BEAUTIFUL, I say. While I might not care for the insert and the green stain, I can tell you someone is falling totally in love with that pipe as I'm typing. It might even be me!

That's a handsome piece of work.

The green stain will moderate to a compost heap brown with use. I think the green isn't worth whining about. 'sides peterson does it too... Green spray.

Given all the basket pipes we all own this is hardly an offensive egregious pipe. Some of us think a finger bone is interesting.

I'm your weirdo. That pipe is dangerously close to being badass.

It's got real character.

Well it would have to be Skip, wouldn't it? The rest of us are flawed. Try and remember the last two sentences in my post.
I used to dig through all the seconds and rejects that had real flaws. This isn't briar flaws but cockeyed construction flaws of all sorts. But some of them are quite functional and I regard them as great pipes. There is a leveling of appreciation with pipe collections that probably starts once we lose the savage PAD problem. Also it probably helps if we're actually smokers in addition to enjoying any hobby interest. About half of my pipes are probably seconds and rejects. Maybe we buy pipes that are like us?

Pipe makers are critical of problems because they make them. Us smokers can have a much different appreciation for odd pipes.

Are you sure you haven't come 'round to Christianity? That certainly sounds like a Christian comment.

It's a human comment. Out of us come all ideas including Christianity. But this shouldn't surprise you.

All the things that really last a lifetime tend to accumulate wear and bruises so that we may see ourselves reflected in our things. I don't think this is too unusual. The average age of my collection is probably almost 30 yo. I haven't purchased any pipe in almost a decade and in the 90's I purchased maybe two. It's 45 years of pipe smoking this year for me. And I still have all but a couple that met with disaster.

I think like you guys were tricked into liking this pipe due to non-closeup photos so I feel the need to include some close-up pics of the scarred and ugly bamboo knuckle. I didn't even sand down the divot into the stem. Also, I buggared up the drilling and it will on pass a cleaner with some manipulation.
