A Brace of JAG Chubby Olive Lovats

Post by joegoat » Thu Apr 06, 2017 8:43 am

This was my last block of Olive. The block's size allowed for a pair of pipes. So here they is! A chubby pair of Lovats. I have been smoking one and it has been wonderful! The plumbing seems to be right.

I've been smoking on that JAG olive wood lovat.

I am surprised that the olive has held up so well. Smokes like a briar.

Briar is a tree root. Root wood doesn't burn in a campfire. It makes a great fire-proof smoking medium.

I expected that a hardwood like olive would burn like, well, wood.

I think olive breaks in quicker than briar. My theory is that olive actually burns a bit and helps form a charred layer that cake readily clings to. The first bowl gives a hint of olive oil throughout, but after two or three more I really don't detect anything being given off by the olive. If a healthy cake is maintained I think an olive pipe will last for many years. I'm interested to see how olive wood pipes will age. I've noticed that they oxidize and darken a bit in the first week or so after carving.

Only trying to catch up with the likes of yourself, BrianMadsen, and FredS and other pipe makers on the forum whose names I don't recall. I've still got a long way to go!
